Constantine may return as monarch of Greece

Greece's new civilian government revived the 1952 constitution and pledged a free decision by the people on restoring the monarchy. A referendum or constituent assembly vote within six months was deemed likely to settle whether Constantine would be allowed to return as king.

Texas prison imposes news blackout in Carrasco hostage saga

Texas Department of Corrections bars negotiations details and media access as the Carrasco hostage crisis enters its 10th day. Officials warn public reporting could endanger the 13 captives while Carrasco demands an armored truck and a short wave radio as conditions to release hostages. Two Death Sentences Ordered in California Murders

Two convicted killers were sentenced to die in the gas chamber at San Quentin, the latest in California after the death penalty revival. Ronald Sims and David Rudolph Peterson received death sentences for willful, premeditated murders, joining codefendant Donald Bernard in the new penalty regime. Sims killed during a $10 West Hollywood holdup, while Peterson and Bernard murdered two teenagers near Victorville.

Communists Press Da Nang Drive In South Vietnam

Communist forces escalated a two week campaign against Da Nang shelling the city and overrunning three nearby villages. Viet Cong infantry seized three government villages southwest of Da Nang and besieged Que Son as a 2000 strong regiment moved toward the city.

FTC investigates food and energy antitrust violations

FTC chairman Lewis Engman said investigations are under way into whether food and energy industries violated antitrust laws to push up prices. He foresees possible complaints within months and notes plans to probe health care, while litigation continues against eight major oil firms and local distributors.

Sunday Deadline For Bell Phone Walkout

Negotiators for Bell Telephone and unions representing about 725,000 workers resumed talks to avert a strike set for midnight Sunday. Union leaders claim strike inevitability, while AT&T spokesman Jim Mundis says both sides will seek solutions. If launched it would be the first major Bell system walkout, sidelining roughly 750,000 employees.

Nixon Surrenders More Watergate Tapes for Judge Review

Nixon's lawyers turned over 13 additional Watergate tape recordings to Judge John Sirica as part of the cover up case. The batch includes five talks with Colson and Haldeman and eight with Colson, Haldeman, and Ehrlichman. A ruling on executive privilege is pending.
