Plane runs out of gas as Coast Guard escorts crash at sea
A light Cessna 150 en route from Reed Hill airfield in San Jose to Visalia ran out of fuel and crashed into the sea 35 miles southwest of San Miguel Island after being guided by a Coast Guard plane. Ray Sloan, 47, of San Jose, was rescued and hospitalized in Goleta in good condition. his unidentified companion is missing.

County searches for gas bids as prices rise
Los Angeles County cannot secure bids for its 12.5 million gallon gasoline contract and may buy far less than usual. Supervisor James A. Hayes says Shell Oil has raised its bid by 50 percent, increasing the price to about 27 cents per gallon, costing up to 765000 more than current purchases.
