Humans win as toll machines fail on Bay Bridge

California will remove new automatic toll collectors on the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge after drivers fed coins wrapped in cellophane into the machines. Toll takers will return to lanes April 30, said Public Works Director James A Moe, noting machines struggled with inexperienced drivers.

Severe storms lash Arkansas and Texas with hail and flooding

Thunderstorms swept much of the nation with high winds and hail localized in the Ozarks and northeast Texas. In Arkansas, 50 mph winds toppled trees and downed power lines in Russellville, hail struck near Lake Ouachita and in Searcy Danville Fort Worth also reported hail. Heavy rain flooded Conway while McAlester saw over an inch and a half. A severe thunderstorm watch covered parts of Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee.

Billy Graham Urges Demonstrations for God and Renewal

Evangelist Billy Graham urged evangelicals to stage demonstrations and a march on Pennsylvania Avenue to lead a national renewal. At the National Association of Evangelicals session, delegates supported resolutions condemning abortion except to save lives or in rape and incest, and backed social concern including race relations and prayer. An NAE Vietnam stance supported Nixon's plan to end the war, with aid for affected lands and people.
