Business and labor back split plan for county

Business and union leaders raised 10 585 dollars in Santa Maria to back splitting Santa Barbara County and forming Los Padres. The rally drew about 200 supporters including Lompoc figures. IMPAC aims for 20 000 dollars and 30 petition circulators to push an election, with 11 400 valid signatures due by June 10.

Group Forms to Oppose Santa Barbara County Split

About 20 residents met in Lompoc to form Taxpayers to Preserve Santa Barbara County to counter plans to divide the county. Maryann Marsh was elected president and Sherry Hibbitts treasurer with Olga Howard Dorothy Brandt and Mary Walsh named to key roles. The group urged citizens to inform themselves before signing petitions seeking a public vote on the split proposal.

Racquetball Center Planned for College Park Lompoc

BKB Associates expects a 500000 dollar racquetball facility on 4.5 acres in College Park Lompoc to open by fall pending ARB plan approval on May 4. If permitted, bids in 30 days and four to five months of construction could place completion around October or November.

Carter vows fight to last vote on gas tax increase

President Carter pledges to fight to the last vote in Congress for authority to raise gasoline taxes as part of his energy program. Carter says no decision on sending tanks to Zaire
