White Hills Bombing Shocks John Manville Plant Area

Two planes dropped bombs near the Johns Manville plant at White Hills. A 200 pound blast crater marred hillside terrain, a eucalyptus limb was torn off, and brush destroyed. No injuries were reported as eyewitnesses saw the craft, while Camp Cooke and military investigators prepared."}

Lt Dick Henning Commended For Action In France

Lieut. Charles R. Henning of the 937th Field Artillery Battalion has been commended for ingenuity and devotion to duty in Southern France from August 15 to October 1, 1944. As Assistant Intelligence Officer he improvised map making and survey control methods enabling accurate artillery fire and reducing risk to friendly troops. The commendation cites his courage perseverance and devotion reflecting credit on him and the Army.

Douglass Likely Named Justice Of Lompoc Court

Phillip Douglass expected to be named Justice of the Peace for the Fifth Township at a special Board of Supervisors session. If approved he would serve as both Justice of the Peace and city police court judge, replacing the late A. Gordon Oliver. Each post pays 100 dollars monthly, with the Justice of the Peace term lasting until the next general election.

Lieutenant Moncur Killed in Action with Fifth Armored Division

War Department casualty lists report Lieutenant David K. Moncur killed in action in Europe. He served with the Fifth Armored Division and trained at Camp Cooke. His wife’s listed address was 407 West Ocean, Lompoc, though she has not resided there recently.

Campaign to raise quota for Boy Scouts funds

Under Toby Negus as general chairman the 194 canvass aims to raise 2448 dollars for Scouting in Lompoe district. About 100 volunteers from clubs churches and organizations will interview nearly 1000 residents businesses and groups in the valley over the next two weeks. Miles P Walton now serves as full time field executive for the northern county. Chas Laubly audits and collects reports in the city clerk's office as donors mail in advance gifts.

Police Enforce Night Parking Ban as Streets Go Quiet

At 2:00 a.m. cars must be off the streets per city law, with officers preparing a fresh batch of tickets after Chief Peterson ordered new prints. Police expect more violators to appear before the judge, who will handle the cases.

New Members Plea of Hospital Auxiliary

Mrs. Leo Mollath presided at the February 13 meeting of the Womens Auxiliary of Lompoc Hospital. Committees were named for sewing, refreshments, and flowers for March. The group urged non professional volunteers in Lompoc to join and attend meetings, held the second Tuesday monthly at the hospital. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Charles Gross.

High Honors For Lompoc Scouts at Silver Beaver Dinner

O. B. Westmont was awarded the Silver Beaver at the 28th annual Lompoc Scout dinner with Oscar Kirkham presenting the citation. Westmont’s longtime service in the Mission Council Lompoc District and his roles as commissioner and district chairman were noted during the ceremony.

Lieutenant Malone Killed in Japan Air Action

Mr and Mrs O L Malone of this community learn their son First Lt Maurice Malone has been killed in air action over Japan. The family says Maurice enlisted three years ago and served as a B 29 first pilot. He leaves a wife in Dallas and is survived by three brothers in the armed forces.

County Attorneys Pay Last Tribute To Gordon Oliver

The Santa Barbara County Bar Association honored the late Atty. A. Gordon Oliver with a memorial service in the courtroom of Superior Judge Ernest D. Wagner in Lompoc. Arden T. Jensen delivered a eulogy recounting Oliver's career as city attorney, justice of the peace, and private practitioner, praising his integrity and devotion as husband and father. The court adopted a resolution mourning his loss and extending sympathy to his family.

Thirty Three Inch Steelhead Leads In Derby

The Moore Mercantile sports department lists a 10 pound 10 ounce steelhead at 33 inches as the leader in the big fish derby. James Martin caught the big fish that tops the prize money from the local sportsmen’s association. Crowds packed the river as hundreds fished, but last Sunday drew the largest turnout. Anglers hope for more rain and a muddy stream to spur another steelhead run.

Health Officer Carswell Resigns Unexpectedly

Dr. John Carswell county health officer resigned at the supervisors meeting citing ill health effective April 1. He had led the health department about three years and earned $7200 yearly. The board will confer with him in Santa Barbara on the department’s future handling.

War Fund Drive Well Under Way For Red Cross

The Red Cross War Fund drive has begun with donations already received. Mrs. Harry Hobbs says volunteers will push hard to ensure a successful campaign. Fifty three donors left for Ventura to give their Valentines to wounded soldiers, including Toby Negus on his sixth trip. A March 27 call for appointments and April 2 home nursing classes for high school girls and adults are announced by Mrs. A G Hollister and Mrs. R E Sudden respectively.

Pattee Receives Bank of America Quarter Century Honor

M. R. Pattee, manager of the Lompoc branch, marked 25 years with Bank of America by receiving a diamond studded gold service pin and entry into the Quarter Century Club. C. F. Wente presided at the ceremony in San Francisco’s loan headquarters last Thursday. Pattee began his banking career February 8, 1920 with the First National Bank of Lompoc and became manager in 1934 after the bank joined Bank of America’s statewide system.
