Apollo 13 faces a race to re enter as engineers prepare a crucial burn of the lunar module engine to steer toward a safe splashdown. Windler and Weichel warned that missing the re entry corridor could send the crew off into a fatal orbit unless the maneuver succeeds.
James Michael Faucett, 27, of Green Bay Wisconsin, turned himself in to Santa Maria deputies and was moved to Lompoc where he is jailed on attempted murder charges. Bail set at 3750. The victim David Emerson Elliott 26 of China was treated for neck and hand cuts and released. The assault occurred on Harris Grade north of Lompoc after a hitchhiking incident. A steak knife with serrated edge was recovered.
United Press International reports truck drivers across Ohio and Pennsylvania faced kidnapping claims and multiple shooting incidents as wildcat strikes idled about 80 000 drivers and disrupted industry. James Ballenger said armed men abducted him near Cleveland and warned him away. Police noted four shootings targeting trucks in Ohio and ten windshields smashed on Interstate 70 in Pennsylvania.
In Lompoe, George Cotsenmoyer E C Stevens and Sol Lefkowitz won the 1970 74 council seats as incumbents fell. Turnout was 54.45 percent with 4 159 of 7 638 registered voters casting ballots. Cotsenmoyer led with 2 635 votes Stevens 2 478 Lefkowitz 1 656 tying Mayor Robert MacClure 21 behind. The other candidates Henry Ramirez Floyd Dunlap trailed. Cotsenmoyer thanked voters and urged unity while Stevens pledged to serve all residents and boost citizen involvement.
The library board voted to extend the standard loan period to three weeks and raise adult and record or picture fines to 2.50, while children's fines stay at 1. The new policy keeps new fiction at seven days. Election results show Lefkowitz narrowly leading MacClure for the third seat as turnout hits a record 4,159 with strong showing in Hapgood and United Presbyterian precincts.
Los Angeles officials said they would seek contempt citations against leaders and members of the United Teachers of Los Angeles as strikers continued to boycott classrooms. The UTLA represents about 22 000 of the district’s 25 000 teachers amid a wage dispute and calls for more school funding.
The British ship Akaroa, with 413 passengers aboard, was reported out of danger after a fire earlier today in the Atlantic about 1 200 miles east of Bermuda. Coast Guard said the vessel was no longer in peril.
