Washington reports show Congress unlikely to approve Ford's $722 million Vietnam military aid, with Democrats split and most predicting failure, even as some back a $250 million humanitarian package. Republicans praise the courage but share reluctance over the military aid proposal.
The California Assembly voted 54 to 25 to repeal the NOX device requirement for 1966-70 used cars in the South Coast Air Basin. The change, now sent to the Senate for concurrence, may go to Gov. Brown for signature though aides oppose it.
Helicopter armada ferried 3,000 elite troops to Xuan Loc as heavy fighting raged at the besieged city 38 miles northeast of Saigon. Government forces reported repelling two human wave attacks while Hanoi Radio claimed a Communist victory. Eight USAF Starlifters airlifted equipment and civilians out, with tickets to Travis AFB priced at $288.
A Harris poll released April 14 shows 57 percent disagree with expanding U S aid to South Vietnam and Cambodia to save Saigon, 29 percent support it, 14 percent undecided. Americans still back allied commitments, with 64 percent supporting continued weapons to Israel and 44-43 percent backing aid to other allies even in limited wars.
The House approved a 1.2 billion dollar budget authorization for Space Shuttle development for the next fiscal year with no cuts in funding. The measure sets upper spending limits while separate appropriation bills specify actual dollars. The 1975 76 request is 51 percent higher than last year, and authorizes 47 million for Kennedy Space Center and Palmdale testing sites.
A collision at Central Avenue and O Street left five hurt, including 16 year old Gabriel Amador Huitron in serious pelvis and arm fractures. Fernando Macias, driver of the other car, fled. police seek him on felony traffic charges.
The Gautreaux family faced four bicycle citations totaling 60 dollars for Todd and Mike in Lompoc. The mother cites insufficient bicycle law education at schools beyond elementary grades and calls for junior and senior high instruction and formal licensing. Officials say education is emphasized, but licensing remains unsettled and no formal program exists.
E Howard Hunt Jr was ordered to report April 25 to the Eglin Air Force Base work farm in Florida to serve the remainder of his 2 to 8 year Watergate sentence. He had 11 months served before a January 1974 release pending appeal. He spoke of financial troubles and noted other burglars' appeals failed.
