Unemployment rate hits four and a half year high

The March jobless rate rises to 4.4 percent, the highest since August 1965, marking the third straight monthly gain. Unemployment among adults, especially women, and teenage joblessness remain notable, with sector shifts and seasonal adjustments shaping the totals. Lompoc Seeks Shared Use Of Sewage Plant

Vandenberg Village Mission Hills and the Federal Correctional Institution have expressed interest in using the Lompoc Sewage Treatment Plant. City Administrator Gene Wahlers said a meeting discussed feasibility and a cost sharing plan if an interarea use agreement proceeds. A selection committee will consider engineering firms to add capacity and involve the three areas.

Santa Maria teachers walkout protests education cuts

Teachers at Santa Maria Joint Union, Righetti and Delta High Schools staged a one day protest closing the three campuses as the district cut the educational program by 210,360 dollars. Spokesman Frank Russo said ongoing deterioration and subsidies masked the issue of salaries and funding. Twelve percent of teachers reported to work across the district with no picket lines. schools planned a noon closure at the two larger sites.

Negotiations approved for United Fund in Lompoc

Lompoc United Fund directors authorize William Organ to negotiate a shared professional fundraiser with Santa Maria or Santa Barbara groups and report back for final approval. A special committee may study a future merger, with Lompoc's share around 3000 dollars for the rest of the year and up to 16000 dollars for a full year.
