San Diego mothball fleet ends as ships deemed obsolete
The San Diego mothball fleet of 223 ships is declared obsolete with June 30 as its end. Fewer than 20 ships remain, and the 10 acres of piers will be repurposed for active-duty vessels. The closure saves jobs but ends a storied reserve system once used in Korea and World War II.

Geothermal push seeks penalties and deadlines for energy firms
Sacramento lawmakers propose legislation giving the newly created Energy Resources and Development Commission authority to regulate geothermal development. The bill would require oil companies and utilities to develop geothermal resources or divest land, with deadlines set by the commission. Support comes from Assembly and Senate leaders as well as Speaker Leo McCarthy and Senate President Pro Tem Mills. A second bill may offer substantial tax incentives to developers.
