Fifteenth Year of Weather Satellites Marked by NOAA
Washington observers note 15 years since the first weather satellite launch in 1960. Stationary SMS satellites 22 300 miles high provide half hour imagery over North America, with polar orbiters offering twice daily global coverage. NOAA aims to use both satellite types for around the clock U.S. monitoring and global weather temperature soundings.
