A Santa Ynez community group plans the 1976 Old Santa Ynez Day for Saturday June 12 replacing Tortilla Day. Events include a morning non mechanized parade barbecue and California cuisine games and a night dance with proceeds for community improvement.

Invitations issued for a special party honoring George B. Smith retiring as Santa Ynez Valley high school superintendent. Marilyn Wheeler leads the committee for a May 4 event at the Veterans Memorial Building Solvang with 6 30 cocktail hour and 7 45 barbecue dinner. Reservations at $10 per person to Miss Wheeler 523 Thumbelina Drive Buellton. Smith leaves the post in June after nine years.
The Solvang Danish Days drive distributes posters and tickets for the Trip to Denmark prize a two person 22 to 45 day journey with $800 expense money and a potential Oct 4 to May 31 travel window. Runners up receive 12 consolation prizes. The winner is announced at the Oct event. Proceeds support Santa Ynez Valley community facilities and the Solvang Festival Theatre.
Debbie Weaver of Lompoe and Toby Darden of Carpinteria will compete in the Lions regional student speakers contest tomorrow night in the Juliette Room at Pea Soup Andersen's Buellton. The Santa Ynez Valley Lions Club hosts a dinner. about 9 Lions from six area cities are expected. The winner advances to the district competition with the topic Citizen Rights Vs Criminal Rights.
Harold Purdy chief design engineer for the County Department of Transportation will present an estimated cost study on an alternate Chalk Hill Road route at the Solvang Municipal Improvement District board meeting tonight. The original plan totaled 338000 with 118000 from the federal government and county funds the westward shift would raise costs and cause delays.
