Why US athletes in African meet

Stan Wright of the AAU said American athletes competed at the South African Games only with their sports bodies’ approval. He noted AAU committees are autonomous, with gymnasts, wrestlers, swimmers and a basketball team allowed to compete while track was barred. Wright claimed his track committee would not send athletes until apartheid policy allowed equal opportunity for all races.
