Magee murder trial awaits judge ruling Friday

Superior Court judge Morton Colvin will decide Friday if Ruchell Magee must stand trial again for murder and kidnapping in the 1970 Marin courthouse shootout. Magee, serving life at San Quentin, was mistried after an 11 to 1 split on murder and kidnapping charges following eight days of tense deliberations.

Democrats Offer Plan to Use Budget Surplus

Assembly Democrats led by Bob Moretti propose delaying a one cent sales tax increase for 13 months and spending 70 million to buy parks and strengthen Capitol quake resistance. Moretti says the plan delivers “the whole meal” while criticizing Reagan’s surplus disposal as “an apple.”

Sacramento Senate approves education and crime bills in session

The Senate passed loans for small school districts to upgrade earthquake safety and other measures including stricter murder solicitation penalties, changes to presidential primary timing, and housing reforms. Committees advanced several items to Ways and Means and opposed bills faced passage.

Former Oxnard publisher Thomas Fleming dies at 64

Thomas H. Fleming former publisher of the Oxnard Press Courier and former director of the California Newspaper Publishers Association died at age 64 after collapsing at his Oxnard home. He had been treated for hypertension and ulcers. A Youngstown Ohio native, he moved to Oxnard in 1963 as business manager of the Press Courier.

Smoke ban testimony pushes bill for smokeless air

Sacramento witnesses from physicians to citizens urged the legislature to give nonsmokers the right to unpolluted air. Assemblyman Briggs proposed AB202 banning smoking in hospitals, public meetings and theaters and requiring nonsmoking areas in restaurants, with fines up to 50 dollars. The hearing paused for at least two weeks.
