Compromise on UC regents terms and selection debated

UPI report on talks between the University of California regents and lawmakers led by Assemblyman Vasconcellos and Sen. Way. They discuss shortening terms from 16 to 12 years, a 10 year transition, and a plan for a nominating committee while preserving governor nominations. If no deal, Rodda proposal would keep selection but add 18 regents and 12 year terms.

Tornadoes Roar Across Belt Kill Two and Wreck Towers

Storms spawned 28 tornadoes from Cincinnati to Huntsville causing deaths in Alabama and Kentucky. A Tuscaloosa hospital treated six storm injuries while tornadoes toppled radio towers near Huntsville and Franklin. Bridgeport Illinois saw a destroyed building and buses. Effingham area reports a truck blown off I 70.

Chavez revives grape boycott to pressure growers

Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers renew their table grape boycott after setbacks, saying funds are being raised in 65 cities to punish growers who sign with the Teamsters. Chavez told about 200 supporters that the effort will mobilize ten times as many workers, predicting growers will lose as much money as last year if they refuse to recognize the union.

PG and E solid waste energy plan announced by mayor

San Francisco plans a privately financed project to convert solid waste into methane or an oil like substance. PG E will fund the venture with Sunset Scavenger and Golden Gate Disposal aiding. Details of cost and technical aspects were not disclosed.

Portions hike in food stamps

Washington reports a 5.6 percent increase in food stamp allotments for four person families effective July 1. Four member families will receive $150 monthly, lifting total benefits nearly 30 percent above late 1973 levels and raising the program’s annual cost by about $300 million.
