Major performers like Buddy Hackett and Shirley MacLaine were advertised as reopening shows as votes continue next week.

Divorce League challenges anti-ad divorce law in federal court

The California Divorce League filed in federal court claiming a state law banning divorce assistance advertising is unconstitutional. The nonprofit group offers clerical help to those seeking divorce and argues the law violates First Amendment free speech. The statute makes advertising to procure a divorce a misdemeanor under Section 15a of the Penal Code and much of the league’s activity stems from newspaper and radio ads.

Reagan denounces Ford policies in nationwide address

Ronald Reagan challenged Ford's economic and foreign policies in a 30 minute NBC telecast to boost his stalled campaign. He pressed for a balanced budget and warned of inflation while criticizing US military leadership. Ford dismissed the speech as negative rhetoric and urged unity at a Washington fundraiser. A separate note: the Senate created a temporary committee to study the Senate committee system with a report due by Feb 28, 1977.
