The Selegraph offers two dollars in advance as the base rate. Two dollars and fifty cents within six months, or three dollars after six months. All cases the subscription becomes due after six months. Job work and advertising must be paid in advance.
The House of Representatives discusses Pickens committee report on British correspondence about the burning of the Caroline and McLeod’s liberty. The piece argues Britain’s global power, warns on steam warfare, and urges peaceful settlement of boundary and search disputes with a rigid, factual outline of the 1783 treaty lines and proposed northwest boundary.
A London report details the loss of the sloop Favorite, Capt Croker, amid a Tong an uprising. Far fought in a fort siege, Croker dies from wounds after leading a doomed assault to compel surrender and restore missionary access.
The Canadian press columns react to Gov Davis's stance on the Northeast Boundary. The Quebec Gazette notes his firmness in supporting the U S claims as usual among his countrymen, while urging caution about trusting such assertive positions.
A November to December plot by John L. Burgoyne and two accomplices aimed to rob the Hayes and Brokaw stores, murder a clerk, seize goods, and set fires. An apprentice alerted his employer, exposing the scheme and identifying an accomplice later captured, with a chair maker named John B. Walters tied to the plan.
A southbound couple arrives in Cincinnati. The man boasts wealth, the woman stays out of sight. A landlord’s daughter falls for the woman, two ride away in a carriage, then vanish. A letter reveals the twist: the fortune seeker disguised as a woman is the innkeeper’s son in law’s former servant.
The Monroe Railroad Bank at Macon Georgia resumed specie payments on the first of the month. The teller weighed each silver coin as it was paid out and counted thirty dollars and some cents in a day. The first applicant with four hundred dollars hired the teller for two weeks. The branch Railroad Bank paid out thirty seven dollars ten cents on the first day.
From the Huntington Advertiser a deadly disease, said to be more fatal than the Cholera, has appeared in a neighboring county. Victims die within hours and residents flee the town seeking safety.
The debts owed by the several states total 200,000,000 dollars. Annual interest at six percent amounts to 12,000,000 dollars.
