The steamboat Tuscaloosa burst her boilers ten to twelve miles above Mobile killing many and injuring a large number. About one hundred passengers were aboard and a cargo of valuables was lost. Reports state thirty kegs of powder exploded as the vessel burned. Mr Beaseley carried about $22000 in bills on his person and the Tuscaloosa safe held $47000 in bills plus gold and letters. the safe was later recovered from the wreck. Survivors were aided by the steamer Hewitt which brought them to Mobile.
