Resolved by the Senate that the judiciary committee be instructed to investigate whether the trustees of the Wabash and Erie canal or any acting under their authority have bought or sold canal land scrip in violation of law. The committee may summon persons and papers and must report the inquiry results to the Senate at an early date.
The Committee on the judiciary reports that no direct evidence shows the trustees of the Wabash and Erie Canal or their agents bought or sold canal land scrip. It finds clerk John W. Wright frequently bought scrip below par, acting for indebted clients, profited from discounts, and used office funds to credit customers. Trustees disapproved his actions and vow to prevent further deals, requesting discharge from further consideration.
The Committee on the Judiciary was assigned a Senate resolution directing them to conduct an enquiry into the conduct of the trustees. The action follows a Senate referral seeking scrutiny of trustee activities.
