The Portland Tribune praises unseen talents who shine in private life and urges cultivation to reveal their gifts. The note laments a poet friend in the Argus office who toils unseen, hoping public exposure may come through other writers’ support.
Whig delegates convene in Indianapolis to nominate state officers and electors. Officers chosen include President Samuel Bigger and multiple vice presidents. resolutions advocate democracy, protective tariffs, one term presidency, and prudent public lands policy. The gathering also appoints committees for an address, resolutions, and district advocates.
The Whig State Convention met in Indianapolis on Tuesday January 16 1844 with delegates marching from the Capitol to the Court House and back. Col John Vawter Col Thomas A Morris and Gen G R Steel named grand marshals and officers of the procession were listed along with several county representatives. Samuel Bigger was temporarily chair and John J Defrees and Douglass Mauguire named secretaries as the convention opened with an address on its aims.
