Thursday morning issue by J C and D Douglass publishers of the Lane of the United States note the publication at Market and Bridge streets corner.
A chaotic Christmas Eve scene follows Gamaliel Gambril and wife as a domestic dispute erupts in Ringbone Alley. Neighbors Montezuma Dawkins and others weigh in on marriage laws and the burdens of matrimony, showing a weary view of domestic life. Gambril contemplates emigration but is urged to stay, joking about selling his family as a package.
A mixed fragment shows a verse about a lamenting loafer and a life of drinking and drift, followed by reports from Lauderdale county Mississippi. It notes the Lauderdale County Courthouse burning, resignations, and the ensuing court disruption, plus legislative items on the Military Academy at West Point and federal salary adjustments for 1838.
