Austrian war office states Italian forces were driven from their entire Lavarone plateau position. The offensive pushed forward multiple strategic positions and the number of Italian prisoners rose to 23,883.
Joseph C Crew secretary of the American embassy at Berlin was aboard the Danish steamer Frederick VII which arrived at Quarantine from Copenhagen and Christiania. Dispatches hinted at a peace mission and a note from Emperor William to President Wilson. The Frederick VII was held at Kirkwall for seizure of 37 mail bags. The ship carried 145 first cabin 319 second cabin and 674 steerage passengers.
The war office announced the capture of several lines of British positions over a front of two kilometers near Givenchy en Grohelle. The report was filed from Berlin via wireless to Sayville on May 22.
London reports the Italian steamer Birmania of 2215 tons has been sunk. Lloyds notes the vessel was destroyed in action.
The fighting continues between Austrians and Italians in the Tyrol and between French and Germans around Verdun, with German and British clashes near Lachasse. Austrian offensives south of Trento push Italians back on the Lavarone plateau as Vienna reports heavy reinforcements and 24,000 prisoners. Roy Green of Indianapolis working with a local automobile dealer was arrested yesterday afternoon for speeding while testing a car. He pleaded guilty in police court and was fined $5 with $10 costs, totaling $15, which he paid.
The 1915 Republican national convention in Chicago is expected to be highly noisy and exciting with 16 presidential candidates and tight margins until the final ballot. Plans include 100 bands and 650 glee and marching clubs, while tickets reach 250 dollars. Sergeant at arms Wm F Stone begins selecting 1900 assistants from 5000 applications.

Dublin May 22 The Associated Press reports that Jeremiah C Lynch received a death sentence and Peter Gallighan was condemned to death but commuted to five years penal servitude Others were given various prison terms The court martial opened in private for John MacNeil president of the Sinn Fein volunteers and former civil servant now a professor at the Irish university
A dramatic pretrial rehearsal in Waukegan features high school youths mimicking the Marion Lambert tragedy. An impersonator will portray Orpet and a girl actor simulates Lambert’s mouth powder as prosecutors present the case against Will H. Orpet in court.
The Indianapolis directory issued June 1 tallies 116,776 names and an estimated city population of 291,940, up 3,625 names and 9,063 people from 1915. The Associated Press notes the gain reflects growth over the prior year.
Speer wins Denver mayoralty under a charter he drafted creating an industrial bureau to boost local industries. The bureau will scrutinize underperforming firms, serve as efficiency experts, and help unemployed residents find work.
The board of works holds a hearing today on a declaratory resolution for the Southeast District sewer. Consulting Engineer G L Clausen of Chicago assists and will present a final cost estimate, reportedly higher than the original. The sewer would serve the city area east of Fifth Street, south of Broadway to the eastern limits.
Wabash Ind May 22 Mrs Edwin Lower elected truant officer for Wabash county, first time a woman holds the post. Two male applicants, political deadlock for 15 hours, board splits Republican and Democrat. On third ballot Mrs Lower wins after compromise with Mrs John Ulerich as candidate.
George Smith, Royal Centre resident, held on highway robbery, was released on $1000 bond signed by Jimmy Sullivan. J G Felker remains jailed awaiting bond. Attorneys Kistler & Kistler for Felker and Rabb Mahoney & Fansler for Smith. Police seek third suspect in the Lafayette robbery of C C Russell on Friday night.
The Commercial Club discussed reviving the Western Motor Works with Manager Bowen proposing a revival funded half by Bowen and half by Logansport capitalists. A 300000 dollar estimate was cited with a committee to meet Bowen in Marion and report back at a mass meeting within two to three days.
In Muncie Indiana on May 22 Deputy Prosecutor Gene Williams faces trial on a grand jury indictment alleging conspiring with Mayor Rollin H Bunch and others to solicit bribes from blind tiger operators Special Prosecutor W A Thompson noted letters urging jurors to convict Williams to aid Thompson s election The Civic League letters were denied by league members and the defense claims ally sent them Special Judge Fred Gause dismissed the venue and ordered a new venire of 25 to appear tomorrow morning
President Wilson strengthens the note protesting British interference with U S mails. Secretary Lansing and state department lawyers drafted the document which reiterates inviolability of postal correspondence under the 1907 Hague convention. The note targets Britain policy of seizing neutral mail vessels, delaying shipments, and cites harm to American business with supporting evidence.
At Atlanta New Jersey May 22 the Presbyterian general assembly moves toward a floor decision on charges of heresy against the New York Presbytery. The committee proposes reprimand and cautions on future conduct while some delegates demand harsher punishment. Rev Edward L Warren of Louisville was elected permanent clerk. A 98 year old delegate from Media Pa spoke on the churchs progress in 70 years.
