Two Hundred Entombed After Palos Mine Explosion
Paris Alabama May 5 All hope of rescuing any of the forty five white and 150 to 145 negro miners entombed in Palos Coal and Coke Company No 3 mine after a afternoon explosion has been abandoned. Two bodies found later rescue work continues. Authorities suspect gas buildup caused the blast and air is being pumped into the mine as relief crews arrive from Birmingham and Knoxville. The disaster follows the Mulga explosion earlier in April and adds to mining community grief with Red Cross relief efforts and official investigations underway.
