A record storm battered the county inflicting major damage as the power plant lost its roof under heavy wind. Emergency crews respond to widespread outages and damage across towns with repairs expected to take days. Local officials urge residents to stay indoors and conserve energy.
A severe blizzard battered the region with gale force winds and heavy snow. The Indiana Union Traction plant near Hill Top lost its roof while repairs crews worked through the night to restore service. Telegraph poles and lines were down briefly but restored by evening. Steam and interurban trains and streetcars operated on schedule despite the storm. Temperatures plunged from 50 to 18 above zero in 12 hours.
Paris February 28 The peace conference aims to settle four key issues by March 15- the Franco German frontier the Adriatic situation the Russian frontier and freedom of the seas. Captain Andrew Tardieu said many questions should be resolved within a fortnight. He added France seeks safeguards not annexation of the left bank of the Rhine to prevent German attack and that the Russian question will be taken up late next week.
The Detter Farmers Association meeting planned for this afternoon at 2 o clock in the courthouse has been postponed due to the com show. A new meeting date will be announced later.
North to south across Missouri Iowa Minnesota Oklahoma Kansas Nebraska and southern South Dakota a severe blizzard disrupted trains and drifted snow. Chicago faced possible zero degree weather while Minnesota reported a stock train collision killing two and injuring several. Nebraska saw 2 to 16 below readings as a passenger train with 25 aboard stalled near Wausa.
The Cass county fuel administrator’s office has closed. Fuel Director John W. Barnes packed and sent all office records to Washington, including coal shipment and sale data. The office operated about 16 months under Collett and Barnes with no government pay and minimal expenses.
The largest sugar camp in Cass County on the Pleasant Grove pike owned by James Harney was opened Thursday. Harney maintains 1,400 maple trees and produced 300 gallons of syrup last year, though continued cold weather this year threatens to halve that output.
