City officials postponed a hearing on authority to raise electric light and power rates for city and rural districts. The delay followed illness of Glenn Van Auken and difficulty locating John McCardle to conduct the session. The city argues rate increases fund needed improvements while opponents claim tax shifts and higher bills unfairly burden users.
Salvatore P. Rusiso a Buffalo designer was found murdered in Cleveland with an unidentified companion. Detectives traced a Buffalo street address in Rusiso's clothing to the "King of Buffalo Black Handers" and named them as suspects. A third man who fled remains unidentified after the slaying.
Investigators probe a possible link between Ray Layton and Jack Coughlin and a Hercules New York Central wreck on January 21. Detectives questioned both suspects about nitroglycerine used to blow train No 303, with no solid leads. Coughlin’s home is traced to Fulton Missouri and Layton’s location unsettled.
Washington January 30. Commissioner General Caminetti outlined plans to deport undesirables in small detachments rather than by large ships. He said aliens ordered deported must be sent to their home countries and that small group removals may use regular passenger ships when cheaper. Since last June about 1,400 aliens have been sent from the United States.
New influenza cases in the last 24 hours total 1015, down from 1149 yesterday, with 340 pneumonia patients vs 445 previously. Deaths: influenza 112, pneumonia 80. Health Commissioner Robertson reimposes funeral restrictions, banning public funerals and wakes with attendance limited to ten. He attributes improvement to absence of saloons and limited access to alcohol.

Charles B. Kistler former city treasurer pleaded guilty to embezzling city funds. He was fined 100 640.10 double the amount embezzled and sentenced to one to twenty years. He claimed most funds went to Mrs Lilian Jane Wilson of Cleveland. A warrant is out for Wilson who is being sought by police.
Grand Rapids Mich Jan 30 A jury to hear the evidence in the elections conspiracy trial of United States Senator Newberry and 122 codefendants had not yet been completed when the federal district court adjourned. Two influenza cases in the panel and illness excuse reduced the tentative jury prompting earlier court session to finish examinations this week.
A clever crook forged about twenty five checks totaling around 600 dollars in Kokomo Lafayette and Logansport. On Tuesday checks passed in Lafayette in the name of James Richardson of the Lafayette Lumber company and in Kokomo in the name of John W. Johnson president of the Kokomo Brass Works.
Indianapolis January 30 Governor James P Goodrich defended Indiana s new state tax law before the Republican Editorial association at its mid winter banquet He challenged critics and argued no state government matches Indiana in economies over the past three years The resolutions committee refused to endorse Goodrich for Governor along with two U S senators while praising other officials Officers elected at the meeting were Ed J Hancock president J W Pierce secretary and S D Lindsay treasurer The banquet featured remarks by State Republican Chairman Wasmuth and editor George B Lockwood with Senator Watson and Mrs Margaret Hill McCarter among the attendees.
A runaway team hit a delivery truck injuring Ross Carson 22, son of Night Police Captain Joseph Carson. The accident occurred on Court Street near the jail as the team bolted from the rear of the Murdock hotel. Carson was transported home for medical care with suspected internal injuries. The driver Elmer McKaig faced potential charges under the city ordinance.
