A Loganport plant suffered a $60,000 loss from a fire that destroyed the local Works. Firemen, hampered by low water pressure, battled the blaze as thousands gathered to view the brilliant flames. An accompanying dispatch notes Europe near peace with Germany amid ratifications and a Paris protocol among major powers.
Congress condemns New York state assembly action ejecting five socialist members as опасe of lawlessness and revolution. Senators Borah and Thomas warn such expulsions set dangerous political precedent and urge restraint while backing seating of the disputed members if justified.
A midnight blaze consumed the Logansport Basket Works at 920 Bates Street destroying the plant including two loaded cars on the sidetrack and the warehouse filled with shipments. Miss Mamie Cleary said losses exceed 60000 with partial insurance, while low water pressure and inflammable materials hampered efforts. The fire spread rapidly, threatening nearby homes and knocking out Westside electric service until repairs in morning.
Prevost was arraigned in Mount Clemens court on a charge of murder in the December 23 shooting death of J. Stanley Brown, son of a former Detroit manufacturer. Prevost stood mute and requested an examination set for January 23.
The House rejected Victor Berger of Milwaukee socialist 328 to 6, barring him from his Fifth Wisconsin seat after he sought sworn admission. The elections committee cited Berger’s espionage act indictment and prior conviction as grounds.

The letter, dated November 21, responds to Captain Livermore and contrasts with statements by Brigadier General Sherburne as debate continues.
Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, quoted in Philadelphia, says close aides expect President Wilson to decline a third run. He notes a national sentiment against a president running again and asserts friends expect no consideration of a bid.
The Tipton township institute held in Walton high school assembly room featured music by the Julian orchestra and an address by Mrs. Elizabeth Stanley on making the world safe for democracy. She urged education of mothers, English language for immigrants, and women voting to purify national conditions, calling for enforcing Sunday laws and film censorship to keep movies clean.
The Boy Scout financial campaign to raise five thousand dollars to sustain the local program should conclude by the end of next week. National Deputy Warne from Chicago met with Dr. E. Lusk chairman of the joint legislative committee says the action challenges the fitness to serve of the socialists as individuals. He issued a statement from New York tonight.

Lodge signals willingness to continue talks, aiming to strip the dispute to a few issues and possibly resolve Article X and voting equality questions, paving a path to ratification.
Washington January 10 The Senate passed an anti sedition bill with severe penalties for acts or propaganda advocating overthrow of the government by force or violence. The measure moves to the House without a recorded vote.
Ratifications of the Versailles treaty were exchanged at 4 16 this afternoon, making peace effective among Germany France Britain and other allied powers except the United States. Rumors of delay proved groundless. Baron von Leisner said the US remains not on a peace basis.
The United States has notified Germany that the armistice remains in full force and effect though the Paris ratifications of Versailles are deposited. The state department states that the armistice provisions and extensions continue to bind both nations despite the treaty status. Baron von Leisner expresses hope the war state will end soon for Germany.
In Vicksburg Mississippi on January 10 a coroner’s jury found pharmacist Jesse Watts guilty of murder and charged Reuben Winbush as an accessory in the missing physician Dr D S Alverson. A mob formed but the prisoners were secretly moved to Jackson for safety. The victim had five bullet wounds in the back and a crushed skull. Watts allegedly threatened the doctor’s life if Mrs Watts did not recover from illness. No motive is known. Witnesses said Watts summoned the physician by car Monday night.
