Washington January 9 The Versailles treaty debate deepens as Democrats and Republicans seek a compromise ratification. Senator Hitchcock warns against undercutting the pact while Republicans and some Democrats push for reservations to satisfy party factions. Senator Lodge supports using the issue politically, signaling a campaign confrontation ahead.
The Associated Press reports Baron Jehiel, head of the Austrian relief committee, has asked Washington to mobilize aid for seven million Austrians facing starvation and possible anarchy this winter.
Indianapolis January 9 Next Thursday tentatively set as a special one day session date to ratify the federal suffrage amendment. Miss Helen Benbridge leader of the Indiana Woman's Franchise League reports pledges from 79 legislators and sufficient general assembly support to guarantee a two thirds majority. Governor Goodrich expected to issue the call after a conference and pledges arrive.
At the Harrison township farmers institute in Lucerne Cass County 250 attendees heard Mrs. Elizabeth T. Stanley urge shortening the white coffin procession and creating a medical child health officer. She attacked soft drink parlors, praised pure water, and pressed for ratification of the 36 states after January 13 to make the nation dry. FE Luzzader followed with continued remarks.
Elmira N Y Jan 9 Senator Clayton R Lusk chaired a joint legislative committee in New York state assailing the Soviet bureau in New York as a blind for distributing Lenine letters to American workers and other anti government propaganda. He answered questions prepared by five socialist assemblymen who have not yet seated in the state assembly.
Hon. Arthur R. Robinson of Indianapolis will deliver the Lincoln Day address at Cass County Republican festivities on February 12. Robinson, a lifelong Republican, served as Indiana state senate Republican floor leader and president pro tem. He later joined the army, rising to major, served in France and the Rhine occupation, and was honorably discharged in 1919. He now practices law in Indianapolis and is praised as an eloquent speaker. The event includes a banquet at Elks hall with an early 6:30 p.m. dinner and interurban return plans.
Prices for bread and milk have recently risen in Logansport and neighboring Indiana cities. Milk in Logansport now sells for 14 cents per quart after recent dealer announcements of higher costs. Carl E Phillips aged 32 lineman for Logansport Home Telephone company died at St Joseph hospital from a fractured skull suffered Thursday afternoon after falling thirty feet from a telephone pole at Anhier De Haven soft drink parlor rear. He died without regaining consciousness. Survived by wife Josephine and parents Frank T and Mrs Phillips of Cleveland avenue. Funeral arrangements set from family home atop College Hill after removal to Tucker Peirce Easter day undertakers.

Chicago January 9 The Associated Press reports Congressman Jas W Good of Iowa chairing the House appropriations committee estimated next fiscal year federal needs at 5 25 billion dollars excluding railroad, a per capita tax of 47 dollars. He criticized department heads for extravagance and warned against press bureau or British budget plans, urging an American budget code.
A Moscow wireless dispatch reports Krasnoyarsk in eastern Siberia has fallen to the Bolsheviks. The remnants of the first second and third armies surrendered with about 60 000 prisoners counted. Krasnoyarsk lies along the Trans Siberian Railway about 300 miles east of Tomsk on the Yenisei river.
Advices to the state department from Siberia and European Russia indicate that foreign representatives in Irkutsk report Japan has continued an aggressive wage campaign. The dispatches suggest heightened tensions in the region and potential escalation of hostilities.
A member of the trade commission told a Senate committee that arrests of employees were connived at by packing interests to paint the federal board as a hot bed of Bolshevism. He alleged the recent raids were framed to mislead the public and justify harsh measures.
Washington officials said arrests of federal trade commission employees were frame ups to paint the FTC as Bolshevik aligned with Chicago packers. W B Colver alleged connections to Martens and Nuorteva and urged stronger meat industry regulation, noting the Packers DOJ settlement only paused Sherman act actions. He argued that competition is waning and monopolies rising despite existing federal laws.
Subpoenas were served on Ludwig C. A. K. Martens, self styled Russian Soviet ambassador, and his secretary Santeri Nuorteva. They appear before the senate foreign relations sub committee Monday to testify on alleged Soviet propaganda in the United States.
London January 9. The Union of Railway Workers rejected government wage settlement terms at a conference. No deadlock exists and no strike is anticipated. The conference remains in session and will reconvene to hear a government reply on proposals referred back for consideration. No government officials were interviewed tonight.
