Logansport Reports 1916 Fire Losses Chief Griffin Announces
The 1916 yearly fire report by Fire Chief Griffin cites a total loss of about $22,000 in Logansport with the largest single hit on McCaffrey & Company. March had 25 fires, May June and October the fewest, and 169 fires occurred. Telephone alarms totaled 109 versus 60 box alarms, with seven false alarms and 11 grass fires. Nearly six miles of hose and 1,986 gallons of chemicals were used, chemical methods saving many owners. Defective flues caused 15 percent of fires. North Street station led with 154 runs, followed by Sixth and Broadway 115. Major losses included McCaffrey store $10,000 on December 24 and several residences and barns from March to December.

A Goshen and Michigan branch train struck an automobile east of Goshen at midday, killing Grover Maurer 50 and Noah Stutzman 70, and Maurer’s wife, with Carrie Stutzman seriously hurt. Five people rode in the buggy. Maurer escaped injury.

Train Hits Buggy Women Die In Indiana Collision
In Crumstown near South Bend Indiana two Crumstown residents Miss Alta Day 19 and Mrs Lena Fox 25 were killed when their buggy was struck by a fast west bound Grand Trunk train. Day died instantly and Fox died later at a hospital.
