Railroad Man Sends Christmas Gift From Shep Story
Indianapolis December 23 memory of Shep the dog that saved a family from a tramp and protected a daughter from rattlesnakes led Charles Austin of the Pennsylvania railroad to provide Sam Cohen with 2.25 for Christmas. Cohen, a newsboy, had his dog pardoned by Mayor Bookwalter and later faced pounds fees. Cohen offered to give the money to the mayor, who declined, saying the fee was for the good of the order. The tale ties the old plains dog Shep to Cohen’s present rapport with city officials and recalls the dog’s fate from wolves poison Rayburn adjacent plains legends.
