By unanimous vote the Paris municipal council confers on President Wilson the title Citizen of Paris and finalizes reception arrangements. President Wilson will receive the grand gold medal of the city while Mrs Wilson is given a gold brooch with diamonds and doves bearing olives.
American forces crossed the Rhine and held Ehrenbreitsstein fortress at Coblenz following German approval. The 1st, 3rd and 4th divisions formed the bridgehead east of Coblenz while the 32d 90th and 42d divisions prepared to advance. Coblenz was quietly occupied Sunday as bridgehead operations continued with bridges and tugs readied.
The House passed a bill by 193 to 97 to raise salaries for 11 federal judges. District and Court of Claims judges would get 7509 dollars annually, while circuit judges would receive 8500 dollars. The measure goes to the Senate.
Members of the machinists union in Kokomo strike citing breach of an agreement by employers. Affected plants include Aperson Co Brass Works Superior Machine Tool Works Red Mills and Haynes Automobile Co.
Indianapolis December 13 The Hope Independent Telephone company had its request to raise rates at Hope and Hartsville denied by the Public Service Commission. The record notes the company appears largely owned by George W. Dorrell who traded a farm for control years ago and lists numerous expense items.
A preacher Rufus Motley, colored, was arrested for preaching near Barney Zimmerman’s meat market at Fifteenth and Wright streets. Police took him to jail and a sanity commission will be appointed to determine his condition.
The American Red Cross announces no relief for the central powers. General manager George E. Scott states no relief work is contemplated there except possible aid for American or allied prisoners refugees and internes.
Yokohama reports the United armored cruiser Brooklyn maintained perfect discipline after an explosion that killed six crew members and injured about thirty. Captain Althouse said the exact cause was not determined but likely coal dust.
Pennsylvania No. 103 crashed into an eastbound Lake Erie and Western freight at Redkey. Engineers Fred Hockenbeamer and Gibbons. firemen C E Williams and E Reubens escaped with injuries. Two box cars of ore valued at 56000 and lumber were damaged. passengers aided in rescue and no one else was hurt. Conductor Gruell led the passenger train despite the wreck.
The Associated Press reports that Attorney General Gregory ordered the return of Mrs. Lilly Busch’s property seized under the alien property act. She regained American citizenship and had filed for the return of millions in breweries stocks bonds and New York real estate.
Vienna reports Count Czernin, former foreign minister, shared a copy of the April 1917 letter to Emperor Charles. He warned Austria faced a desperate condition and that another winter campaign was impossible, urging immediate peace negotiations.
The influenza situation shows little change in two days with 49 new cases in the county for the last 24 hours: 24 in the city and 25 in the rural areas. County officials report the ban remains except in Deer Creek township and Harrison township has the most rural cases. one new patient entered the Emergency hospital bringing total to 51, with four discharged and the first hospital death recorded. Donations totaled several individuals and local services contributed sugar and laundry help. Continued on page two.

Secretary Baker informs House military committee that discharged soldiers may permanently retain their worn uniform and overcoat. Dent prepared a bill to grant the authority, reversing a plan to collect clothing three months after discharge.
A mail plane en route from Washington to the Hampton Roads naval base crashed into the Willoughby hotel roof in Norfolk. Two of the five men aboard were killed and three others injured.
The House Foreign Relations Committee closed hearings on a resolution urging American delegates to the peace conference to back Ireland’s right to freedom independence and self-determination. Chair man Flood said a vote would come early next week. Twenty one Irish organization delegates urged action while George L. Fox of New Haven opposed.
Washington reports a December 23 naval pageant in New York Harbor to honor the first ships of the American armada returning from Europe. Secretary Daniels will review the fleet aboard the Mayflower as Admiral Mayo leads from the Pennsylvania, with nine dreadnoughts, twenty destroyers, and over forty converted vessels participating.
Huntington Indiana reports Earl Reed age fourteen son of Mr and Mrs J W Reed suffering his eighth severe illness this year. His record includes scarlet fever whooping cough measles chicken pox pneumonia typhoid fever with relapse and now influenza.
President Wilson landed at Brest at 3 24 PM to a vast roar of cheers and naval pageantry. He then traveled to Paris where France will host him as the nation's guest with Pershing and Mrs. Wilson joining the crowds on shore and the Star Spangled Banner filling the air.
Navy Public Health Service Hospital on Gallups Island reports negative results from influenza experiments. One hundred volunteers exposed to inhale and ingest influenza germs showed no illness. some were inoculated with serum yet no cases developed. Tests to continue with careful monitoring.
