Clyde Giffin remained seriously injured after a wagon passed over his chest on Miami avenue Thursday noon. Doctors say the extent of his injuries will take time to determine.
City officials debunk a rumor that 60 Panhandle workers were laid off. The company confirms only up to 30 men were released in three weeks, mainly temporary hires. Payroll for October is higher than last year and November is expected to rise as well.
Judge Landis and Standard Oil attorneys meet in Chicago as three tariff books from the Chicago and Alton Railway vanish from record. Attorney John S. Miller says the books, excluded at trial, could sway a reversal bid in the U S court of appeals. The bill of exceptions text is agreed for Judge Landis’s signature, completing the lower court record.
In Entiat Washington on December 13 nearly 11 000 sheep migrating from the Cascade Mountains to the Entiat Valley fell to sleet slick ground. A leading slip caused a cascade into Mud River and soon thousands more followed as handlers struggled to regain control.

Frank Forguan of 508 Wabash avenue reported his eight year old daughter Marie missing after school. Police described her wearing a gray coat and hood with light brown hair. Authorities suspected she may have spent the night with friends after believing she had run away from home. No trace found by late night.

Cass County Horsethief Detective Association will appoint a committee at the January meeting to organize the annual midwinter picnic at the Masonic Temple. Members often exceed capacity with abundant food. Widows hold honorary, non attending memberships. women are eligible but only honorary. The combined Detec tive Associations of Deacon, Galveston and Young America total over one thousand members with growth expected after year’s start.
Huntington area Christian churches attended a Foreign Missionary rally at Ninth Street Christian Church. Dr Roy Dye of Bolenge Africa spoke on progress among the Kongo and medical mission work. Josephine Franklin from Domah India and C J Weaver from Osaka Japan shared insights on missions and Christian outreach.
State pure food inspector F. W. Tucker called for cleanup at dairies meat shops and slaughterhouses visited yesterday. He found most milk sheds and cow barns out of compliance with state law and warned prosecutions if improvements aren’t seen. Rabbits and game hung outside shops drew particular criticism with orders to keep them indoors.
Norman Fleming of Thompson Lumber Co has returned from Indianapolis after securing representation as district agent for Mutual Life Insurance Co in the territory. His wide western state network will aid in his new role.
Mrs. Martha A. Campbell of Greenfield township is charged with incendiarism in a secret indictment filed in Sandusky. The WCTU leader and Sunday school superintendent allegedly burned Miss Lou Mather’s building in October. Miss Mather also faces an indictment. Insurance firms allege a plot to divert insurance funds to pay a mortgage with Campbell set to buy the property. Both women are on bond.
Etta M. Allen sued Hudson Coal and Mining Co for damages totaling 10000 for the loss of her husband Frank Dean. The circuit court awarded the verdict this morning. Dean died under unclear circumstances leading to the suit.
Citizens along the Michigan road between Logansport and Burlington plan to form a company with $250000 capital to build an interurban from Logansport to Frankfort. A A Newer a farmer near Deer Creek leads the effort. Frankfort backers pledge $100000 and farmers along the line expect $50000, with remaining stock hoped from local citizens. The route would pass through a rich agricultural and populated stretch.
Ninth district congressman C B Landis advocates a 1 percent tax on all bank deposits to fund deposit guarantees. The plan aims to reassure depositors for National and state banks, expand bank examiners, and spur loans on real estate. Landis plans to discuss the idea in Congress soon.
Mrs. Philip J. Ruff, 42114 Market Street, was struck in the forehead and knocked to the sidewalk by a stranger on Erie Avenue near Fifth Street. The assailant fled north toward Fifth after the attack witnessed by about a dozen pedestrians. Police searched all night but could not locate the suspect who wore a stiff hat and black overcoat.
The R. R. Y. M. C. A. mechanical school enters its second term starting January 1 led by Herman Freshour, a Purdue University graduate. The first class had nine pupils. the second class has enrolled up to now and plans for 15.
Dresden reports Queen Carola widow of King Albert of Saxony is suffering nephritis and in hopeless condition. Last rites were given today and she is not expected to survive the night. Queen Carola, daughter of Prince Gustav Vasa of Sweden, married Albert in 1873 and became queen on his death in 1902.
