Senate confirms Taft appointment at once to fill vacancies on the bench. Vandeventer, a Marion, Indiana man, and Lamar of Georgia named to positions on the commerce court. Former Justice Taft moves into the chief role as vacancies are filled.
The Senate confirmed Edward Douglass White of Louisiana as chief justice of the United States after a rapid session. Nominations accompanying White to the Supreme Court included Willis Van Deventer and Joseph Lamar, while commerce court picks were also listed for later action.

New York Dec 12 Governor elect John A Dix says he will reappoint General William Verbeck as adjutant general. Verbeck, a Republican, was appointed by Governor Hughes last May amid Democratic bids for the post. Dix notes the state spends 1.5 million yearly on the military establishment and stresses the need for prudent leadership.
The Supreme Court holds that a conspiracy under the Sherman antitrust law may be a continuing offense, broadening how indictments are viewed. Gustave E. Kissel and Thomas B. Harned must answer further to the 1909 New York indictment alleging a plan with the American Sugar Refining Company to squeeze the Pennsylvania Sugar Refining Company out of business. The ruling eases government prosecution of conspiracies by allowing proofs beyond a three-year window for actions ending before indictment.

Nathan B. Hyde former U S commissioner for the southern district of Wisconsin and former New York bar member was found dead in his Chicago home. Police say a crowbar was used and the house ransacked with robbery suspected as motive. He was nearly seventy years old.
Plans unveiled by Bacon & Griswold show a new Baptist church at Seventh and Broadway to cost at least 30000 dollars and be ready by August 1 1911. It features a terra cotta brick exterior with Greek Ionic styling, a Broadway entrance with four massive columns, eight story frontage, and a basement pool with dressing rooms, showers and lockers. The auditorium will seat 400 on the main floor with 250 in a gallery and 260 in a Sunday school room, expandable to 910 with a rolling curtain. a pipe organ and new furnishings will be installed.
Two companies of state militia were placed on duty at the county jail in Columbus Georgia to deter a reported plot to blow up the building. Sheriff Baird requested the call out following a Saturday morning riot in which several citizens were shot as a mob tried to reach Henry Taylor a Black man held on an alleged assault charge. Taylor had been moved to Fultonville jail in Atlanta. Jailor Pelts is seriously wounded and not expected to recover. A second man shot in the head during the mob rush is missing.
A Spartanburg man shot his stepfather while defending his mother during an attack by the husband. Police report the incident occurred as the mother was under assault, with the son acting to protect her. Details remain limited due to early report.
