Crain Named Head of Soldiers' Home in Milwaukee

Joseph E. Crain is appointed head of the Soldiers' Home in Milwaukee with a salary of 5000 dollars a year. The report notes broader probes into high living costs by federal grand juries in New York Detroit and other cities. Fred M. Swacker will supervise the New York inquiry and investigations expand to several states.

Local Architect Crain Named Governor of Milwaukee Home

Joseph E. Crain, a Cass county native and prominent local architect, is appointed governor of the Northwestern Soldiers Home at Milwaukee. He will assume duties January 1, 1917, at a salary of 5000 dollars, succeeding Col. T. H. Ijams. The selection was made by the National Soldiers Homes board of directors, with Judge John C. Nelson as a member. Crain learned of the appointment unofficially for weeks and will leave for Milwaukee December 28.

The Farmers Non-Partisan Political League claims full control of the North Dakota house with 81 of 113 seats and dominance in the senate where 18 of 25 new senators belong to the league. The group seeks state ownership of marketing facilities and run its own caucus and slate in Bismarck.

Local Man Slated On Double Charge

John Forqueran, local man, was arrested last night and slated on two charges. He faces driving on the wrong side of the street and allowing the engine to run while away from the car. His trial will be held Monday.

Mayor Urges End to Street Car Strike

In Fort Wayne the city and Fort Wayne & Northern Indiana Traction officials met at Mayor Guthrie's urging. They discussed reinstatement for seven striking street car workers and the option of placing them on the extra list versus returning through regular positions. The men did not commit to ending the strike.

Ford Stolen From In Front Of Odd Fellows Building

Fred Mayhill of 1442 North Third street reported his five passenger Ford stolen from in front of the Odd Fellows building at Fifth and North between 7 and 9 o clock Saturday evening. Clerks at Schwalm hardware recalled hearing the car driven away, think owners were nearby. No trace by midnight, and Peru police reported two autos stolen yesterday.

Mayor Uses Pete Haley Leg as Stocking Model

Mayor Guthrie created a large decorative stocking inspired by Pete Haley's leg as a pattern. The work, hoisted by his stenographer’s tools, is on display in the Tribune window. He plans to fill it with candy and present it to the municipal Christmas tree committee on the Saturday before Christmas.

James Marshall a 65 year old trustee of Jackson township Cass county lies near death at his home one mile east of Galveston after a paralytic stroke suffered early yesterday. Physicians have given up hope. Marshall a life long Democrat is well known in southern Cass and northern Howard counties.
