Allied forces advance to the left bank of the Rhine as German fortresses along the river fall. Troops, supported by air power, push to secure crossings and tighten control in the region.
Paris reports the peace congress to begin in the first week of January with four months of deliberations. British delegates include Lloyd George and Balfour, with Bonar Law and Barnes among others. Translators in 23 languages will staff American delegates, covering French to Arabic and more.
Assistant Postmaster Frank Amoss reports virtually no Christmas packages sent locally despite a campaign to shop and ship early. He cites war bond and stamp purchases as reducing December mail, while soldier and sailor packages ended November 31 with 600 shipped in 15 days.
The war revenue bill is reported to the Senate with debate to begin next Tuesday. Chairman Simmons plans the majority report while Senator Penrose files a minority critique focusing on 1920 rate fixes. London December 6 Eleven sailors are missing after the British warship Cassandra struck a mine in the Baltic Sea last Wednesday night. Torpedo boat destroyers rescued the rest of the crew according to an official Admiralty communication.
Ex press train from Orleans collided with a second train near Meung Sur Loire eleven miles southwest of Orleans. Twelve bodies identified, others still buried, twenty five injured. Four cars crushed into wreckage.
Wilmington NC December 6 Two persons are believed killed and 30 injured in a wreck near Elrod when an Atlantic Coast Line Express train from New York to Key West derailed near here tonight.
Washington reports further improvement in health conditions in army camps at home for the week ending November 29. The number of new cases declined to about one thousand, a 25 percent drop, though Spanish influenza remains prevalent. There was a slight rise in pneumonia hospital admissions.
Washington December 6 the senate confirmed Representative Carter Glass to be secretary of the treasury succeeding William G McAdoo He will resign from Congress after 16 years and assume duties December 16 with McAdoo remaining director general of railroads until a successor is appointed Glass said he expects treasury policies to follow current lines barring changing circumstances He added no further public statement would interest or enlighten the public and expressed that McAdoo retirement is a national misfortune
Lieutenant E B Flavien returns to resume medical practice after service at Fort Oglethorpe Georgia. Dr J L Gilbert, a former captain, also comes back to private practice. Dr McCully is reported to return next week.
In Washington on December 6 senators debated the proposed league with Democrats Lewis of Illinois Walst of Montana and Williams of Mississippi supporting and Borah of Idaho and Reed of Missouri opposing. Discussion drew about thirty members. a plan to send a senate committee to Paris to learn at the peace conference was postponed.
London reports Prime Minister Lloyd George will propose Germany pay Britain and possessions 8 000 000 000 pounds in war reparations. The plan would lift annual tax burdens by about 400 100 000 pounds, per the Daily Mail. Belgian cavalry detachments entered Düsseldorf on Dec 6 and will advance toward Cleves, blocking river traffic.
American forces moved into Mainz on Wednesday, the capital of the Rhine province in Germany, as reported by the Wolff bureau in Berlin. The entry marks a notable advance on Germany’s Rhine front during the ongoing conflict.
