Multiple railroads announce embargoes on perishable goods livestock and other freight amid a looming nationwide strike. Atchison Topeka Santa Fe blocks perishables, Missouri Kansas Texas bars perishable freight, and New York New Haven Hartford requires delivery before 7 am September 4 to avoid disruption.
The U S armored cruiser Memphis was driven ashore by a heavy sea at San Domingo harbor and will be a total loss. Twenty crewmen drowned returning to the ship from shore leave. Gunboat Castine escaped to sea as Memphis officials confirmed the disaster.
An embargo against accepting perishable fruit and livestock shipments for points east will take effect tomorrow, announced tonight at the Santa Fe railway offices in Los Angeles California.
The Southern Pacific directed division superintendents to tell passenger and ticket agents to notify travelers they may face delays if they cannot reach destinations by Sunday night September 3. Freight instructions were expected soon. President Wilson presented Congress with a plan to avert a nationwide strike set for Labor Day and urged reform of the Interstate Commerce Commission and an eight hour workday for interstate railroad workers.
John Borden of Chicago and his party, wrecked in the Arctic, arrived in Nome Alaska in good health. Mrs. Borden received the telegram from her husband yesterday and said no plans were announced.
Senator La Follette files a primary campaign statement showing $3814 in contributions from individuals and $2566 in expenditures. Notable donors include Elizabeth Evan of Boston with $500, Mary Brandies of Boston $1000, and Charles R. Crane of Chicago $2000.
Mrs. George Parker with Superintendent Morris traveled to Indianapolis to recover items believed stolen from her home. She identified one ring and a watch as hers, noting the ring had the smallest diamond. The other two rings pawned with her property were brought to the city for examination by a local jeweler.
The Cass county automobile delegation will leave Republican headquarters at 8 a.m. for Indianapolis to attend Fairbanks notification exercises. About 60 machines were reported with more possible. a reception committee will meet them near Indianapolis and escort them to the Columbia Club. The day includes luncheons, a speech by Fairbanks, a torchlight parade, and a Grand Rally at Tomlinson Hall with Senator Sherman scheduled to speak.
Berlin reports Emperor William dismissed General Falkenhayn and appointed Field Marshal Von Hindenburg as chief of the general staff. Hindenburg’s elevation follows his new supreme command on the Russian front, with Roumania’s plans and entente alignment in play.
Chicago unions rally 6000 freight handlers to walk out at noon tomorrow unless employers grant union dues collection at the job. About 1500 men quit yesterday and today. strike centers on right to collect dues rather than wage increases.

Mrs Brown was arrested last night on intoxication charges. She posted 11 dollars bail for her court appearance this morning and was released to be escorted home by friends.
Madison Indiana August 28 Harold Taylor eight son of Mitehall Taylor drowned today while swimming in the Ohio river. The tragedy occurred in broad daylight and is being investigated by local authorities. Eyewitnesses report strong currents and shallow water contributing to the accident. The boy's body was recovered shortly after the incident.
Kpatrick of Newark New Jersey travels as vice president on a machine tour and visits western states.
Detroit Aug. 29 scattering returns from the state wide primary forecast the renomination of United States Senator Charles E. Townsend of Jackson on the Republican ticket. Townsend held a majority over William H. Hill of Detroit in precincts reported. Three of five Republican gubernatorial hopefuls were closely bunched with Diekman Sleeper and Leland separated by only a few votes. No contest on the Democratic ticket.
A-No. 1 king of tramps, famous worldwide and seen in Logansport on visits, is said to die of tuberculosis at his Milwaukee home. The tramp’s real name is William Newman and he was known to President Wilson, William Howard Taft, J. P. Morgan, and Count Leo Tolstoy of Russia.
Mrs Grace Haas pleaded guilty in police court to profanity and was fined $2 with $10 costs. she arranged payment and was released. The charge by Bill McDonald was sustained while a second affidavit by Mrs Glosser was withdrawn. Testimony showed vulgar language used in a neighborhood quarrel.
A three year old girl, Mildred Ruth Knight of 1218 North Third Street, died 24 hours after diagnosis of infantile paralysis. Quarantines were placed on nearby homes as authorities warned the disease is highly contagious and dangerous. The funeral is private at Mt. Hope.
F A Moss senior member of Moss and Son publishers of the Hoosier Democrat Flora died yesterday morning on the way to work. He was 54 born 1862 founder of the Hoosier Democrat and well known in Logansport. Heart failure given as cause. Funeral tomorrow at 4 PM.
