Mrs. R Miller reports a standout peach tree that began as a two year old plant in a flower bed. It now spans about 15 feet with a twelve and a half inch trunk circumference and heavy fruiting requiring limb props. One twig bears thirteen peaches while a younger tree bore heavily last year but has no fruit this season.
President Wilson decided to go before Congress in person to urge legislation to avert or halt a nationwide railroad strike. He prepared a message detailing negotiations with railroad presidents and Brotherhood leaders, proposing a three to four month commission investigation and possible arbitration after inquiry.
Berlin reports Romania declared war on Austria Hungary. Romania also declares war on Austria Hungary. The Italian government states it considers itself at war with Germany from August 28 via Swiss mediation. Berlin notes a federal council has been convoked for an immediate sitting.
B. H. Bailey, who claimed detective status with numerous badges, was arrested on intoxication charges. A second man, Robert Toombs of Ohio, identified Bailey as the assailant who allegedly attacked him at Fourth and Market, threatened his life, and drew a gun. An affidavit charging assault with intent to commit a felony was signed by Toombs.
Paris reports the mobilizable force of Roumania at about 900000 men including 19 red hussar regiments and 10 black hussars and 480 seventy five millimeter guns plus 160 reserve field guns and several heavy artillery pieces.
St Petersburg reporting from London notes Romania joins the Entente against Austria-Hungary. The foreign office cites three strategic benefits including heavier Allied leverage on the western front, a tighter ring around the central powers, and cut train supplies to Austro German forces. Romania could field nearly a million men as fighting continues in Serbia and the Somme region.
11 year old Robert H. Hillis son of a local attorney was struck by a jitney driven by Mrs R H Conn on Broadway. The car swerved to avoid the boy and rolled onto its side causing minor damage. Hillis suffered a possible ankle injury with X ray to follow. no bones are thought broken.
Final arrangements set for Cass county to participate in the notification exercises for Charles Warren Fairbanks at his Indianapolis home on Thursday afternoon August 31. An automobile committee canvassed potential travelers and expects a large delegation from Winamac and southern Fulton county to accompany the Cass county group. Banners bearing an elephant likeness will be handed to participants as they depart for Indianapolis amid plans for a record Republican exodus barring weather issues.
Fairmount News announces a subscription hike due to higher print paper costs. Beginning October 1 the semi weekly paper will cost $1.50 per year, up from the current $1 annual rate. The paper has been published for thirty nine years.
The Montana diocese Protestant Episcopal Church bishop L R Brewer died in Helena tonight at age 77. He led the Montana diocese for many years and was a prominent religious figure in the region. His death marks the end of an era for local Episcopal communities.
Seymour Indiana August 28 Herschell Phillips 17-year-old bandit who tried to rob the State Bank at Medora of 5000 and shot assistant cashier Mera Hunsucker in the mouth pleaded guilty to assault and battery with intent to kill and will be sentenced later His brother Bluford in custody pleaded not guilty and both youths are in separate jails.
An unidentified driver and a passenger collided with a street car on Miami Avenue between Brown and Plum last evening around 8 o clock. The street car head end was damaged and the auto fender bent with a broken spring. No injuries were reported.
Former President William H. Taft visiting Chicago for the American Bar Association convention said the city convinced him he was out of politics. He noted he walked four blocks downtown and made a purchase without being recognized.
The first infantile paralysis case in Logansport since 1914 is Mildred Ruth Knight, 3, diagnosed at home of John Knight 1213 North Third Street. Dr. M B Stuart and Dr Hatch confirm, quarantine imposed by Health Officer Miller. family to stay home with strict access limits.
In Rushville Indiana James Wells 24 and his wife Rhoda 26 with their two year old son Lewis were riding a farm wagon when a C I W passenger train struck it at a street crossing. James Wells was killed and Rhoda Wells and the boy were fatally hurt. The family was returning home and the wagon noise may have drowned the train. Rhoda Wells suffered a skull fracture and the child was cut and bruised.
The Cass county grand jury is called in session for Tuesday September 5 at 9 o'clock. Sheriff Stanley began notifying jurymen as soon as names were drawn. The jury is expected to have a busy session.
Negotiations close for M. J. Bligh to sell his Rochester lumber yard including land buildings stock and machinery for 220000 to Lewis G. Holtz. Holtz gains riverfront tract south of Panhandle tracks and the old Peoples Bank Building at 414 Third Street. Bligh keeps other city holdings and plans cattle farming in Fulton County with his son in charge.
Harold Isbell, a Standard Oil collector, was robbed of about $3000 by a lone bandit on the Reckner road near Dearborn. He was bound and gagged and dragged into bushes after the thief forced him to stop his car. Isbell later freed by a passerby.

New York Aug 28 Nearly all demands of raincoat makers union were granted after a conference with manufacturers. About one thousand strikers will return to work tomorrow after the dispute is settled.
