Dr Zueblin argued for government ownership to fix badly managed railroads and curb financial manipulation. Governor Shaw defended private effort, citing liberty and limited government, with Washington’s warnings on republican endurance as context.
More than 5 000 automobile licenses were issued to Cass county residents totaling about 55 000 dollars paid to the secretary of state. About 2 200 licenses belonged to Logansport residents and 2 800 to other towns including Galveston Walton Young America Royal Center and rural areas. The county expects a smaller license demand in the next months but anticipates a 17 904 dollar share in the first half of 1919, one third of the year’s total.
The bill extends profiteering penalties and applies to staples like clothing and food containers plus fertilizers fuel and production tools. Two carloads of food purchased by Mayor Barnes during a Chicago trip are en route to the city and should arrive today or Monday. The vacant room at the Daniel Crowe building, Third and Broadway, has been leased for storage and sale to the public once the shipment arrives. Details on the types of food are not yet known.

The Associated Press reports San Diego Aug 22 American aviators and troopers aided by Mexican troops continued the search for Lieutenants F B Waterhouse and C H Connelly army aviators last seen Wednesday after leaving Yuma Arizona for Rockwell Field on border patrol duty. The vast sparsely inhabited terrain stretches about 130 miles from the Pacific to the Gulf with heavy timber and rugged country. Waterhouse resided in Weiser Idaho with his sister and Connelly in San Diego with his mother.
Government agents seized a carload of sugar in Chicago after the arrest of John Syme on charges of sugar profiteering. He allegedly bought sugar at 989 a hundred pounds and sold it to wholesalers at 13.25.
Officials indicate a report on the peace treaty may be issued within the week. Details on reservations and terms are under final review by the negotiating teams.
Washington August 22 The senate foreign relations committee halted hearings to draft amendments to the peace treaty. Plans target striking or altering Japan's control in Shantung while witnesses timetable suggests an early report to the full Senate. Senator Hitchcock predicted action next week as Republicans seek rapid progress.
Witnesses from across the nation told the senate agriculture committee that federal control of the packing industry could harm consumers. Packers urged strict limits on interference, saying government oversight would be dangerous, with speakers ranging from farmers to stock dealers and meat buyers.

Secretary Baker says no recall orders have been sent as White House handles reports on military and diplomatic aspects. Motor truck trains move toward the border with heavy supplies to replace consumed stores. officials call it a local affair.
John R. Shillady white secretary of the NAACP was beaten and put aboard a train to St Louis in Austin Texas. County Judge Dave J. Pickle said Shillady had been inciting negroes against whites and had been warned to leave town. He said the attack was carried out by himself with two others who would not shirk responsibility.

He said the Texas visit aimed to curb lynching and denied social equality as the association’s goal. He planned no further stops in Texas and would decide on next action later.
Friedrich Ebert takes the oath as imperial president at the National theatre amid a large crowd. A guard of honor and the band accompanied the ceremony in Weimar.
Marfa Texas August 22 After a day of limited operations the Amerit punitive expedition faces the probability of a forced march tonight to a new base from which troops will scout tomorrow for the bandits who held two American aviators for ransom. General Dickman says no more troops will be sent from here into Mexico, but efforts continue to obtain more planes for liaison. Search will continue as long as possible and caution against ambush is stressed as American troops push toward the Villa rebels in the Ojinaga region.
