President Taft signed a $160,000,000 pension appropriation bill. The pension office was notified and orders sent to eighteen agencies to begin payments at once. Every pensioner in the United States will be paid by Tuesday at the latest.
Attorney H. H. Howell resigns as Cass County Republican Central Committee chairman. The Republican Executive Committee elected Attorney R. C. Hillis to fill the vacancy, pending county committee approval, while Chas H. Stuart’s resignation as Fourth Ward committeeman is also considered. Rumors link Howell to a Progressive ticket judgeship. Howell plans to establish an office Monday with O. B. Conant.
The House re-passed the vetoed legislative executive and judicial appropriation after debate. Dill's provision to abolish the commerce court remains with changes to civil service tenure. The Panama canal bill, agreed by conferees, passed the House and Senate and moves to the president for signature, including toll-free passage for American coastwise vessels and duty-free shipbuilding materials to the canal zone.
President Lynch of the typographical union denounces secret delegates who attacked his stance on the Chicago pressmen strike. The convention backs Lynch and vows to uncover who criticizes the action and questions their union credentials. A congratulatory telegram to Clarence Darrow regarding his verdict was sent by the convention.
News from New York reports police Commissioner Waldo plans a public investigation into graft tied to disorderly house raids. Inspector Schepps and three other inspectors face possible trial as District Attorney Whitman may join from Albany. The New York Supreme Court, under Justice Goff, will launch a broad inquiry into police corruption and the Rosenthal murder case amid a citywide panic.
