Arlington schooner ashore on Long Beach in heavy gale
In a heavy easterly gale off Long Beach Long Island the schooner Arlington of Boston went ashore before daylight. Eight crew members took refuge on the bowsprit as rescuers struggled to reach them with a line and surf boat. Captain I S Small was lashed off by force after refusing to leave ship. five hours later seven men were saved, but the vessel cannot be salved.
