The District Attorney targets police graft after raids on eighteen Disorderly House Trust resorts based on gambler Jack Rose tip. Sam Schepps awaited as grand jury witness before indictments, four women held on 3500 bail and others forfeited 500 bail to avoid court.
Indianapolis Aug 16 Sam Schepps arrested in Hot Springs Ark as material witness in the Rosenthal murder case in New York. He spent two and a half hours in Indianapolis on his way to New York in custody of Assistant District Attorney J R Rubin. He rode in a Pullman berth on the Big Four train from St Louis, was unaware station officials knew of his presence, and slept during the stay. Rubin said the travel route would be kept secret to avoid interference. witnesses fear gun gang interference. Rubins did not discuss Schepps part in the Rosenthal case.
William Newstead chief engineer aboard the 35 foot Detroit that crossed the Atlantic recently rode as a passenger on the Mauretania. He said the Detroit faced rough seas with the boat sometimes standing on her dream's end as four men clung aboard. He called the voyage a success but said he would not repeat deep sea motor boat expeditions.
Los Angeles August 16. District Attorney Fredericks did not finish closing remarks in the Darrow jury bribing case. Judge Hutton said instructions to the jury would come tomorrow. Fredericks urged the jurors to convict, warning against sympathy for Darrow.
A Vandalia freight train headed to Crawfordsville derailed several stock cars early this morning. Officials say the incident is not serious and no injuries are reported.
Sen. La Follette delivers impassioned speech against the president’s veto and proclaims continued fight for a thoroughly progressive Republican party. He critiques Roosevelt’s record as misaligned with the movement. Senate vote later fails to override the veto 39 to 36, keeping the tariff bill defeated.
President Taft told the Maryland Republican Editorial Association in the White House East Room that electors who plan to vote for a third party are dishonest. A meeting of the executive committee will be called to decide next steps. Funk, away when nominated, returned from Yellowstone Park days ago. If he does not reconsider, the ticket loses a strong candidate against Judge Lairy in a lively race.
H G Duncan of 1416 North Street, working at his home, suffered a severe sunstroke while digging a trench for a sewer. He remained unconscious for about seven hours and required ice therapy and other remedies. He is out of danger but confined to his house for some time.
William Burke former city councilman on the reform ticket disclosed he used the name Benjamin H. Tripp and served a long Massachusetts prison term after crime in Boston and New York. He moved to Philadelphia in 1907 and carved wood, then pursued reform politics. He says he was blackmailed by a fellow convict during his tenure.

Mexico City August 16 Special to the Tribune General Pascual Orozco chief of the revolutionary forces sends definite peace proposals. A truce should be declared and negotiations begin with rebels to lay down arms. Orozco seeks pardons for officers and men and demands Madero pledge reform and removal of three hundred relatives in office. An extra congressional session is expected to consider the proposal.
