New York August 11 The threat of a general rail strike by about 400 000 railroad workers hinges on managers concessions and a possible expansion of the federal mediation board. A new arbitration plan may appease workers who oppose current representation on boards. The mediators urge enlarging the board under the Newlands act, while presidents and officials weigh their options.

Dr. John Murphy of Chicago one of the world's leading surgeons died suddenly at a Mackinac Island hotel during a summer outing. An attack of heart disease was the cause. He was 58, knighted by Pope Benedict, and famed for pioneering appendicitis surgery and later rheumatic joint treatments. His wife was with him.
Chicago August 11. Dr John Benjamin Murphy former president of the American Medical Association and Clinical Congress of Surgeons of America received the highest honors for a surgeon. He led in intestinal surgery with the Murphy button and pioneered joint surgery appendicitis artificial joints bone transplants and lung resections. He ran a famed Mercy Hospital clinic drawing surgeons globally.
In Evasville Indiana August 11 August Gerst aged 10 was killed when lightning struck a tree he sat under on a swing during a storm. The storm brought heavy rain the first here since July 21 and a gusty wind toppled a stack at Graham Glass works causing roof damage.

Wilson completed his acceptance speech detailing administrative achievements.

London reports a powder magazine explosion at Dudesti near Bucharest killed twenty and left 150 injured. The blast caused limited material damage and operations at the plant continue.
