Street Commissioner Slightly Hurt as city employee in harbor encounter with would-be assassin. Mayor Gaynor shot in head aboard the liner. assailant jailed. Authorities report investigation ongoing and security tightened.
William J. Gaynor mayor of New York was shot in the head on the promenade deck of the Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse by James G Gallagher a discharged city employee. Gallagher was overpowered and arrested as the liner prepared to depart Hoboken. The mayor, age 59, survived the assault and was taken to St Marys hospital Hoboken with army of specialists at his side amid public vigil.
A midnight bulletin reports Mayor Gaynor is doing as well as could be expected and perfectly conscious with no infection. A 9 o’clock update says the bullet is split into two fragments not needing surgery. he rests quietly under care at St Mary’s Hospital.

In Chicago on August 9 during the Knights Templar parade more than 40,000 participants and half a million spectators filled Michigan Avenue. A man from Laporte died after being hit by cars. William Hackett of Fostoria Ohio and W B Diddle of Porte Indiana suffered serious to fatal injuries. Harry Wood a Cleveland visitor, 35, was identified after stealing a horse and buggy from Davis H. Grey of Clymers and fleeing. Witnesses at the Singer and Busick saloon saw the theft, leading to Wood's arrest for intoxication and grand larceny after a coat left in the buggy was found on him at the Murdock Hotel where he worked as a porter.
