A street car going up Broadway last evening jolted its conductor from the running board after leaving the Seventh Street switch. He fell behind the car and was found a block away by anxious passengers who watched the event. The car continued and was stopped later. the conductor returned breathlessly to the group amid good natured kidding from Broadway riders.
Pottawattomie Point near Delphi on the Wabash river grows as a summer resort with out of town owners and Del Crampton publisher of the Delphi Citizen among new buyers. Five to six cottages near completion and others built last summer. river offers good fishing and boating. many campers visit each summer.
The Logansport Golf Club traveled to Marion to face the Marion Golf Club. Logan hopes to repeat a previous victory against the local team. The ladies of the Country Club left this afternoon to be entertained by the Marion Golf Club ladies.
Judge J. C. Nelson departed for Flora to deliver the Memorial Day address. His remarks were praised as one of the best ever given there. Decoration day was observed in a fitting manner.
Chief Engineer H. L. Weber oversees the Logansport to Lafayette extension of 38 miles, bringing the Fort Wayne and Wabash Valley Traction system to 114 miles. With grading, ballasting, and track laying underway, electric railway men expect service by July 1 barring weather delays.
The postoffice team defeated the Knights of Columbus this morning at Spencer park by 20 to 2. Batteries: Whitehead and Barrs for the postoffice. Simons for K of C. Alder and Fales. Alder struck out fifteen and allowed only one hit.
Richard Bennett formerly of this city has a leading role in the London play Strongheart. He has been signed to appear with Miss Grace George in Divercon next season, signaling a strong move to Broadway engagements.
Miss Mabel Wilson of Lafayette spent the day in this city, enjoying sights and meeting local residents during her visit.
Veterans and G A R auxiliaries joined Memorial Day events in Logansport with a parade from the hall to the rink where D C Arthur spoke. The A R glee club performed as railroad organizations led a cemetery procession with flags, flowers, and graves of soldiers and railroad men. Major De Hart served as marshal.
Sheriff Enyart and Deputy Barnett moved Harry Whipple at 1 40 a m to a Panhandle station then to a Southern prison to thwart a plan by Whipple’s friends to free him en route to the Indiana reformatory. Enyart acted after Enyart learned of threats and letters to Prosecutor Custer. Whipple faced removal with bolts and bars secured.
Materials have been hauled to the Tenth street dam to construct new water gates for the race. The old gates, waterlogged and rotten, will be replaced as soon as water levels fall enough to permit work by the crew.
Five boys were arrested this morning charged with climbing telephone poles near Usher and Nineteenth streets and cutting holes in the telephone cable, causing substantial damage. They were admonished and released.
Eli Brown 74 was struck by a Panhandle freight train while walking along the tracks at Bunker Hill. The engine pilot hit him causing a cut face and possible internal injuries as he rose and continued along the track. He resides in Banker Hill.
George W. Barnhart aged 71 and Elizabeth Weidner aged 68 were married this morning by Squire Reid in Walton. They had known each other for a month and sought companionship in later life. Both have grown children with homes of their own.
Frank Martin was sentenced to 139 days in jail in Delphi yesterday for intoxication. It was his third offense in a short period. A year ago when arrested he was made to work on the streets, balked, and was tied to a post in the public square before finally complying.
Bee Hive employees form a base ball club to play a Country club team. Some young ladies seek places, claim they can play ball, and question why they should face discrimination.
Jennie Stine was acquitted after arrest and arraignment on a provocation charge filed by James Sullivan. Her cross claim for possession of a wardrobe remains pending.
Rosie Newbold aged 23 and Richard Coble aged 60 were arrested here yesterday at the Delphi marshal's request and were taken back to Delphi by the marshal last evening. Coble a former councilman who fought saloons and the marshal says his detention is spite work by the saloon men and authorities.
Dress rehearsal of Esmeralda last night preceded tonight's performance in Stettiner hall. All 600 seats sold as Sagie Vel Fenton and Robert Justice head the cast with Miss Torr and Miss Douglass directing. Cast includes Elbert Rogers Lydia Ann Rogers Esmeralda Rogers and Marquis de Montessin among others in a North Carolina setting with George Hoffman as stage manager.
Captain Graban received a new revolver from friends in Johnston and Voss's cigar store last night. The presentation occurred amid social gathering at the shop where local residents joined in.
