Jail Break Attempt Through Sheriff House Attic
Desperate escape from the county jail by Fred Nace and Harry Whipple ended when Sheriff Enyart and officers found them after a hole was discovered in the attic ceiling. The men had tunneled from the end of the corridor through twenty inches of brick, hid bricks and mortar, and prepared a rope from bed quilts. Police criticized for not sending them to Michigan City prison. Whipple previously found guilty of shooting Patrolman Thorn.
