A Walton area thunderstorm hailed a fatality when Sanford Stephenson, 25, baling straw on a farm south of Walton, was struck in the back of the neck by lightning. He died instantly. Coroner Hetherington and officials investigate as the storm rages across the region.
The city building committee appointed by Mayor Vauehn to study erecting a city hall will convene in the council chamber Thursday evening May 28 at 7 30 p m All members are urged to attend. Meanwhile a reception at 1318 East Broadway honors the high school senior class for four years of work.
The local high school team and several supporters left this morning for Wabash to play the second game against that city’s high school. In the first game here the locals won easily, and the Wabash team warns they must improve to reclaim honors.
The Red Men failed to secure business group approval and indemnity for city damages, so no council meeting will be held tonight. Mayor Vaughn said he spent the day in his office but had not seen any of the Red Men.
Yesterday a meeting of Independent Telephone Tell company of Indiana members elected officers and directors. Incorporation papers for a half million dollar venture will be filed soon to launch three cable lines linking Logansport with South Bend Remington and Wabash. Officers named include President Walter J. Elmer and Charles McDaniel Noah Brown and Alonzo Hadley companions of James Tyner arrested by Sheriff Seulenborg and Officer Haley on intoxication charges amid suspected murder theories. Coroner Tresider investigated all night and found a revolver near the scene. engineer Roy Massey doubts Tyner’s body was unseen unless lying on the track.
Eight candidates vie for county superintendent as Monday's vote nears. Names include C. R. Lybrook, John M. Cantley, Harry Gray, William Haas, Harry Stine, C. H. Reider, George B. Davis, and J. E. Ludders. Attorney General Taylor rules on deadlock voting and outlines a path to resolve ties via majority ballots and auditor involvement.
Complaints arise over illegal squirrel shooting during the closed season from January 1 to August 1 under a 1903 amendment. Penalties include ten dollars per squirrel and possible ten days in jail.additional fines target Sunday hunting and enforcement fees for road supervisors and constables.
The Up-to-Date baseball team formed by prominent young colored men in the city schedules its first game with Anderson a week from Sunday. Clem Hill elected manager and Percy Jones captain. The lineup includes Jones Berry Hill Stone Brown Turner Parker Jr Eckers Gilmore Butler. They have practiced nightly for two weeks and aim to defeat Anderson.
Police raided the Stone Jug wineroom on Berkley street taking nine men and women to the station on charges of frequenting winerooms. They were released at trial with orders not to repeat the offense as crowds watched the patrol wagon and spectators gathered at the station.
Jesse McColley nineteen a farmer living near Roann was found dead in woods near his home at an early hour yesterday. He had taken a shotgun while wandering from Disko Monday afternoon. The gun’s barrel was empty in his body. A search party located him, with the blast tearing a gaping hole at the scene.
Anna Brice a waitress living with her stepfather at Twelfth and Erie tried to take her life by drinking sulphuric acid in the presence of her lover last night. Hattie Graves stopped the act by smashing the bottle and surviving poisoning, with doctors M B Stewart and Snyder providing aid.
Miss Anna Honich is quite sick at her home at the corner of Broadway and Twenty first street. She is described as seriously ill and receiving care at home.
Carson Emery, a carpenter, was arrested about 10 o clock last night in the act of burglarizing Bruce Shepherd’s West Side home and taken to the station. He escaped through downtown alleys as Patrolman Vermuss and Desk Sergeant Burch pursued, firing unsuccessfully.
The report notes she has not acted yet though burns she sustained keep her mind on the core issue. Authorities observe she might consider leaving others alone as a parallel to her own course if things change.
Fire department rushed to box 25 at Chcett and West Market streets at 2 40 PM finding Owen Carroll the caller. Police officer Costello questioned him and Carroll admitted he turned in the alarm. he was jailed after a ride to the patrol wagon.
Logansport baseball travels to Columbia City for a Saturday game in May. Fans plan to support the team after last year’s victory at Spencer Park, hoping for a large turnout to back the locals in their bid to defend their honors.
A prisoner named Emery escaped during a police search led by Desk Sergeant Burch. A watch was found on Emery, and Captain Foley noted he possibly fled town on a Wabash freight. The watch was later claimed by Wabash baggage man Edward Shorb.
Tom Bradfield, guest of his brother in Ann Arbor, reports ongoing discussion of Albert Patterson's spectacular disappearance. A student reportedly saw Patterson in Toledo the day after he left Ann Arbor.
Mrs. Andrew Johnson came home this afternoon after a several week stay in Indianapolis visiting relatives and friends.
Terre Haute’s Terre Haute Express reports a wreck Monday night in the C E I yards at Tenth and Locust streets involving Vandalia Logansport crews and C E I engines. The Logansport crew stayed aboard while the C E I engineers and fireman jumped. No injuries reported. track clearing began after 12:50 and six hours of rail delay ensued.
Preparations for the Modern Woodmen of America head camp in Indianapolis the week of June 15 to 20 are underway. A grand parade is planned for Thursday with hopes it will surpass all previous efforts and feature many uniformed camps and brass bands. Prizes total 399, 820 and 100 for largest camp participation and best drill. A band contest and special fares from the Central Passenger Association are announced, with a pet fare within 106 miles of Indianapolis.
A spring with pure health giving water was found by a prisoner at the Chicago Bridewell. City Chemist Bisbee tested the water and confirmed its purity. Prisoners and nearby residents now demand daily supply and there is talk of using it in public buildings including the city hall.
About 35 clerks from the Bee Hive boarded an interurban trolley last evening and rode to the city for supper at a local restaurant.
Jockey Harry Birkenruth rode Flying Torpedo at Hawthorne park Chicago after the horse bolted for a mile and a quarter amid a failed start. The horse then sprinted clear to win by over two lengths as bettors who backed him earlier hedged against the upset.
In Indianapolis Judge Anderson sentenced C Irish William Reeder Joe Hammond and Horace W Jackson two post office robbers previously arrested in Louisville by Inspector Kile. They received three years in Leavenworth and ten dollar fines. Reeder and Hammond received two years and ten dollar fines for burglary of a Daleville post office building.
Kerby Lindesmith of Winamac returned from Jeffersonville where he placed in prison Elmer Hardinger who was recently convicted in Pulaski county court on a charge of attempted assault.
