West Side property owners face sewer assessment foreclosures after Dennis Uhl foreclosure actions. Debates flare over the council’s awarding of the contract at high cost, with claims of possible graft and calls for scrutiny as widows risk losing their homes.
Eagle delegates returned home after the South Bend gathering. Hammond was chosen to host the 1908 meeting after a spirited contest with West Baden and Indianapolis. Officers elected include President Charles B. Wintrode and Secretary Mayor Charles A. Rigdon. A new state constitution fixes a five cent per member tax and sets May as the meeting dates.
Epworth league members met in the church Sunday school room with Rev Chesteer Sapth of Peru delivering a talk on Christian Endeavor work. Rev Haines of Market M E Church gave a short address. A follow up meeting is planned to strengthen the organization.
In a divorce case Sarah J. Jones vs Nathaniel W. Jones a restraining order barred payment of 1050 dollars at City National Bank. The wife allegedly drew the funds despite the order claiming she had returned the money, while the husband’s bid to stop payment and restore the funds faced resistance.
Graduates will be busy all week with events starting tomorrow at the baccalaureate sermon by Rev. Bigler. Tuesday features a junior-senior reception in Stettiner hall, followed by a class play rehearsal Wednesday and Thursday performances. Friday brings graduation at the Methodist church with opening address by W H Sanders of Marion and diplomas by Superintendent Douglass. The Annual and the Red and Black will be out soon.
Vandalia suffered a second wreck when Freight train No. 68 derailed at Longcliff. Six center cars toppled, main track damaged, Conductor Vance and Engineer Beamer on duty. Passenger trains rerouted via Wabash, arriving several hours late.
The high school baseball club left this morning for Lucerne to play a local team. Players listed include Gormer as catcher Champe as pitcher James Smith at short Green at first base Gibbard at second base Leo Winslow at third Z. Smith in left field W Grast in center Woods in right.
Everett Sheets and his wife publicly vowed to live in harmony after a prior assault dispute. Rev Mainwaring of the Baptist church officiated a non marriage prayer pledge in which the couple promised to avoid further domestic trouble. Three drunks arraigned for intoxication and disturbances with fines or expulsion.
The state encampment of the G A R and affiliated women societies at Fort Wayne adjourned after officer elections. Department commander W A Ketchum of Indianapolis led the slate with B W Skelton of Fort Wayne as senior vice commander and J F Nosler of Terre Haute as junior vice commander. Mrs Meribah Walker of Clinton was elected president of the W R C and Mrs Jennie Irvine of New Albany led the Ladies of the G A R. Delegates returned home praising the gathering and noting Mrs Wright withdrew from the L of G A R presidency.
Elizabeth C. Fisher seeks divorce from Samuel C. Fisher and custody of daughter Victoria. They married October 26, 1898, and eight years later he allegedly deserted her, giving no support and replying with surly answers.
Telbert Kistler was fined 3 dollars and costs after being arrested for riding a bicycle at night without a light. The report warns that sidewalk riding and riding at night without lights will lead to arrest.
The board of public works took no action on placing the Henry Bergh Mercy band drinking fountain on the triangle lot at Third Street area once occupied by the McKinley monument. A remonstrance signed by nearby property owners claiming the site would become a mud hole was filed last week. Mr. Rice still hopes to obtain permission to locate the fountain there.
Dowling's guests included the earlier reporters and the graduating class of the high school. After sixteen years the class would usually hold its commencement at Dowling but vaudeville prevented use this year. The manager then treated the graduates to a theater party and, after Herbert Keesey finished his song, the crowd erupted in class yell.
Jackson township schools held commencement exercises in the Methodist church at Lincoln last night. Eight graduates received diplomas and Attorney B. F. Long delivered an excellent address on Individuality. Steinhart's Orchestra provided music and County Superintendent Haas announced diplomas.
Mary J. Morgan, a Dunkirk resident since 1890, married John W. Coehrel, a Rush County painter, at noon with Mayor McKee officiating. The couple will reside in Rush County.
Albert J Allen, a Black poet who earlier sought divorce from Minnie B Allen, has been granted a decree of divorce making him an officially free man. He plans to resume writing spring poetry without disturbance.
Meredith Tyner of Eel township and Willard Jones of Clay township were appointed to the county board of review by Judge Larry. The Sprinkle estate has been apportioned among heirs, and the commissioners' work appears more satisfactory than initially believed.
All members of the local post of the G A R and ex soldiers in the city are invited to meet at the G A R hall at 10 o clock Sunday morning to attend the memorial services at the First Presbyterian church where Rev. B. B. Bigler will deliver a special decoration day address.
Miss Bertha Miller of 109 Fourth Street is home from a visit in Ke komo. She is welcomed back by family and neighbors.
Rev C E Roof of Newark will fill the pulpit at the English Lutheran church Sunday morning at 11 o clock and 7 30 in the evening. Sunday school begins 9 30 a m Luther league 6 30 p m. Roof is a graduate of Wittenberg college Springfield Ohio and has a charge in Newark. He is said to be an elegant and forcible speaker.
A funnel shaped cyclone swept part of Logansport East End at noon causing heavy rain and extensive property damage. Several barns and chimneys were destroyed, trees uprooted, and street traffic blocked while no injuries were reported. Officials noted it as the city’s most destructive cyclone.
A local letter from Joseph Patterson explains the delinquent dog owner tax collection flow. Assessors list unpaid owners, then township trustees notify and collect, followed by state attorney involvement with fees. Delinquents may face subpoenas, costs, and possible jail.
The city post office team travels to Adamsboro for a first road game tomorrow afternoon. They will drive by wagon to the town for the matchup.
Gus Gerard known as Steeple Jack will travel to Lafayette soon to perform mid air work painting factory chimneys and several Fort Wayne church steeples.
Forty-seven boys and thirty-two girls of St. Joseph’s Church will receive first holy communion next Sunday, with Rev. A J Kroeger officiating. Bishop Alerding will attend the following Sunday for confirmation as the largest class in the church’s history.
Delegates to the Maccabee state convention in South Bend return home. Milo E. Meredith of Wabash, former great commander for fourteen years, was defeated by B. Borden of Milford City. W E Mowbray of Peru was elected lieutenant commander and J W Replogle of Goshen record keeper.
The Crystal theater drew a full house last evening with an extra strong bill and amateur night. Coonie Miller led the program with Gettysburg war stories using his old army musket. The Dancing Sowers and Mr and Mrs Hinkey Dink performed several new features.
Reverend Margin of Peru will lead services at the United Brethren church tomorrow evening. Revival will run through next week under the local pastor with Reverends Graves of Lafayette and Simmons of Peru assisting.
