Levi Blatt of Anoka narrowly escaped death when crossing the Panhandle gravel pit crossing on a double track. A second train on the unseen track flashed by as he shielded his team, surviving a near fatal moment already marked by past tragedies at the same crossing.
The Logansport board of police commissioners announce there will be no blue law Sundays. They say saloonkeepers are not pushing for closed business on Sundays and that only a few repeat offenders are involved. Drug stores cigar stands news stands and candy shops may stay open without prosecution.
Charles H. Hight paid his wife eleven dollars as ordered by the court last November to avoid contempt. His wife’s attorney James A. West reported the payment this morning, and Hight was ordered to pay an additional two dollars and fifty cents in costs.
The graduating class of 1906 will be remembered as a group portrait adorns the assembly room wall. The three by five foot framed mosaic uses individual photos of the graduates and was presented to the school this morning during ceremonies.
Fire department responded to a gasoline stove spill at 225 North Pearl Street this morning. The stove tipped over, fluid spread on the floor and ignited, threatening the house. firefighters extinguished the flames with minor damage reported.
Thomas L. Hughes twenty five year old single switchman living at 1236 South Belmont avenue was fatally injured near Michigan street on the belt railroad when his foot caught in a frog as a cut of cars moved toward him. He was mangled and died within minutes after reaching City Hospital. He was engaged in switching cars from a Big Four freight train. Both legs were broken as he tried to escape the advancing cars. The accident occurred about noon yesterday.
A farmer driving along Main Street near the old Miami County Court House witnessed a runaway team unleash chaos. The wagon toppled the driver, lines wrapped around him, and he was dragged a block before bystanders could halt the horses. He survived but suffered serious injuries and provided no name yet.
Phi Sigma Chi members defend fraternities amid mothers' congress criticisms in Illinois. They deny that frats foster intoxication gambling idleness or bosses. Local girls back the fraternities while principals nationwide view frats unfavorably. Prof Mitchell says frats are undemocratic and hasten class grouping.
I N Cory returned from the state G A R encampment at Lafayette and says he was aboard a car in the Battle Ground division collision where the motorman died and about fifty veterans were injured. He jumped to safety and escaped uninjured. He notes the motorman was to marry a Lafayette girl on Sunday.
A commission examined Isaac Sauers at his mother's home and ruled him insane due to a debilitated body and nerve breakdown. The 47 year old, described as childlike in talk and behavior, will be sent to Longcliff with a nurse escort. Salina Growell escaped from the Longcliff detachment but was recaptured by a nurse after a chase across fields near Logansport.
Senator Burton, trailing a Supreme Court ruling, met today with Senator Burrows of the Senate privileges and elections committee. Burton seeks clarity on Hale’s introduced solution while denying any resignation. Burrows said the committee will consider questions when it convenes to act on the resolution.
Squire Charles Russell of Hanging Grove township Jasper county earns credit as the region’s top wolf killer. He sent a prior wolf to geologist Blatchley for state museum display and recently dispatched the innards of two more wolves to the U S geologist in Washington D C. He also claims to have tracked a she wolf linked to a local bounty controversy, underscoring his noted prowess and boastful claims.
Fire endangers 160 acre Edward Ford farm, known as Bull Sky prairie, near Hartford City in Blackford County. The muck ground fire, started during tenant clearing a strip, spreads slowly though a small area of about one acre. A 600 bushel per acre potato crop last year prompted an affidavit on record.
L Lacee of 1328 Toledo Street allegedly drove into a rig at Market and Fourth about 8 PM injuring Mrs G D Orwin and Miss Belle Orwin and causing a severe nervous shock. Bystanders confronted Lacee as he attempted to flee, stopped by C EB Johnson who seized his horse.
In Logansport, Lorena Owens, sixteen, admitted striking her aunt with a broom during a self defense claim over epileptic fits. she paid an $11 fine while her aunt Nancy Tolan seeks a Longcliff placement. Charles Storer, Bligh’s bartender, was arrested for allegedly assaulting Mrs. George Kircher at M J Bligh’s. Veteran Deer Creek barber Frank Moore was jailed after public drinking.
Two petitions circulate in Cass county circles opposing John M Johnston’s postmaster appointment. backed by veteran Republicans now out of office, the effort aims to block his candidacy citing alleged Civil Service violations while business men sign in privacy. petitions will be sent to Washington after signatures gathered.
Dogwood trees are blooming in the woods and gathered by flower hunters. The white blossoms adorn the landscape for weeks before bright red berries appear. The dogwood, once famed in Civil War days for its inner bark used as quinine, is called the magnolia of the north.
Auditor Macy of Miami County and Night Warden Ed Fleger dispute entry rights after Fleger’s appointment. Macy denies access to his locked office, while commissioners say Fleger was hired to oversee all county offices and must have access to the departments.
Mrs M A Cline of Logansport reports friends have bought a farm ten miles from Logansport along the Indianapolis electric line and started a large scale poultry business. They express satisfaction with country life and their new home.
A six-man gang robbed the Bunker Hill post office at 1 am taking over 400 dollars in postage stamps and nearly 100 dollars in cash and money orders. They used displayed weapons, drilled the safe while two outside watched, and fled toward Logansport after firing three warning shots at a neighbor.
Judge John C. McGregor tendered his resignation noting insufficient business to keep one justice busy in Eel township. He signed a unique letter of resignation dated May 25, 1906. Also noted, Nicodemus sought court permission to sell grain from the Jacob Nicodemus estate valued at 361.50, and a demurrer in Martin Mock v Burgman was overruled.
Alonzo McClain filed a civil action against Edward Conrad and others through attorney J. T. McNary seeking a quiet title remedy to resolve competing claims to property.
Dr E M Hatch of this city and Dr Piper of Denver returned home after attending the state Homeopathic meeting in Indianapolis.
Mrs. Wallace withdraws her offer for Water Babble the former home of Gen. Lew Wallace, after about a year. The property will instead pass to a Crawfordsville club as Congress delays approval and expresses little appreciation for her generosity.
A steam road roller has begun work on Fifteenth street to raise and level the roadway. The machine will pick up the surface and compact it to create a smooth thoroughfare.
Ruth Myers twelve a Washington school pupil daughter of Mr and Mrs Myers Wilkinson street was struck by a 1 10 p m Chicago fast passenger train west of the Wilkinson street crossing on the Panhandle line The girl stooped to pick up a dropped bag of candy and was killed instantly The engineer attempted to stop but she rose into the oncoming locomotive and was hurled twenty feet The lifeless body was brought to her home as her mother mourned with grief The left hand was crushed when she was struck
Laporte saloon keepers charged with allowing patrons on Sundays contest the claim that the Nicholson law was repealed by the new criminal code. Deputy prosecutor contends the repealing clause only covered provisions within the code and leaves other Nicholson sections intact.
John Grabner owns fragments of two mammoth elk antlers uncovered by Banghart on Grabner’s farm near Fish Lake six miles south of Warsaw. The largest piece measures nine to ten feet from tip to tip and the other spans about eight feet. Plowed from low ground Saturday the antlers are well preserved though the elk skeletons are likely buried. Grabner has recovered a substantial portion.
