A city painter warns that mail order paints advertised at low per gallon prices are offset by high base costs due to excessive thinning and added dryers. The result is cracking, peeling, and frequent repaints, wiping out any initial savings and harming workmanship reputation.
Walton town board passed a dog control ordinance due to recent dog bites on cattle. The measure requires tied or muzzled dogs and authorizes the town marshal to seize dogs found at large. The ordinance takes effect Tuesday morning May 24 1910.
W C Foskett and his son Walter traveled to Indianapolis where specialists removed a small piece of steel from the elder Foskett’s eye. An earlier attempt with a strong magnet at the light plant failed to free the fragment.
Managers Rickert and Leffert of the focal North State league club signed Edward Fleming of Wabash to act as playing manager after Eddie Pfefferlie of Elwood failed to appear. Fleming will assume duties this week as Pfefferlie sorts his future plans in this city.
Mrs Marie Reise of Linden avenue formerly Miss Marie Deitrich was located by The Reporter as heir to a fortune left by her uncle Karl Renohl who died August 2 1909 in Kochheim Germany. The fortune amount is unknown and New York bankers will secure the funds after she gave power of attorney. The discovery follows identification by Dawes Taylor son of the late Joseph Taylor of 823 Market street.
Kansas City judge Ralph Latshaw admits it is true his cats held a strange concert on his screened porch soon after the Hyde trial. The three cats named Cyanide Capsule and Five Grain allegedly chimed a chorus with the word cyanide during a nighttime disturbance.
The First Presbyterian church hosted fifty six graduates for a baccalaureate sermon by Rev J Falconer Fraser of the Baptist church. About two hundred attendees crowded in and thirteen voices led a strong program directed by Mrs Caroline Pike. The seniors, in new clothes, prepared for Thursday commencement at the Nelson theatre.
Logansport faced an ice famine Saturday with two local firms unable to meet demand. The Maxinkuckee company exhausted its stock and the Artificial company had scant supply due to a delayed ice car from the Wabash plant.
Township primaries were held with tickets named in many outlying townships. In Adams county delegates were elected to multiple conventions, Aaron Bell named congressional delegate, William Crook and Noah Sullivan as joint representatives, L A Imbier as joint senatorial, with a slate of county delegates and others listed. Boone and Clay townships followed with their own sets of county and joint delegates, including Lewis Beckley as congressional delegate and O E Shaffer as joint senatorial delegate.
The State Line division introduces a new timetable effective Sunday May 29 with revised arrivals at 7:15 a.m. and 6:50 p.m. Train 24 to Cincinnati shifts to 3:15 p.m. Train 23 to Chicago moves to 6:00 p.m. The Chicago local runs 4:10 p.m. and the Richmond division train now at 3:00 p.m.
Prof J J Wall alias A J Morris, a clairvoyant wanted in Logansport Terre Haute Wabash and Youngstown for obtaining money under false pretenses, jumped his bond after taking $900 from Mrs Porter Lemon and $500 from Mrs Sarah Shultz. He was arrested in Terre Haute and taken to Youngstown but then vanished as new warrants were issued.
Eighty seven candidates were initiated as members of the local Knights of Columbus lodge. They attended mass at St. Bridget's church at nine in the morning, received degree work at the Odd Fellows hall in the afternoon, and a banquet followed at the Stettiner with wives sisters and daughters among about 45 guests.
Saturday night in the streets saw three fights with no arrests. William T. McDonald, held on a Reynoldsburg Ohio rape warrant for assaulting a fourteen year old girl, was sent back to Ohio. No affidavits filed in two street frays. Lee McCarty accused of taunting Lee Price. both declined to file. A woman Porter allegedly struck Church. no arrests. Elia Goff case postponed to Friday for hearing before Judge Ginford.
Marion architect Hiram Elder is commissioned to draw plans for a new Galveston school building. The project is estimated to cost about $25,000 and feature modern facilities.
Local auto dealers enter cars for a hill climb on Pittsburg hill one mile north of Dayton scheduled for May 30.
Cass county circuit judge Wasson presiding in the Wendling brothers line fence case urges compromise as trivial. He adjourns the court and channels dispute to arbitration. The brothers J H Wendling and George Wendling agree to shared fence costs and out-of-court settlement.
The Walton baseball team won 3 to 2 against Western Motor Works moulders yesterday at Spencer Park in a hard fought season opener. Both teams played solid ball as Walton eked out the victory.
The Gen Try Bros dog and pony circus returns, greatly enlarged since its last appearance. Youngsters will be eager to see the train arrive and enjoy the early morning show.
John Harvey, Democratic candidate for county assessor, narrowly escapes injury as his Lambert car loses brakes on College hill ride. The vehicle skids backward from near the top, swerves off the road, jumps a ditch, and crashes into a tree though occupants are unharmed.
Local passengers witnessed a shooting on Panhandle No. 19 at Union Station. Albert Chadwick, 19, of Indianapolis, was shot by W. J. Mulkey of Middlesborough Kentucky as Mulkey tried to attack Conductor William B Lewis and Porter John Brittle who attempted to eject him. Chadwick was wounded in the thigh and rushed to the Dispensary for aid. Police arrested Mulkey and witnesses from the station were to testify.
Over one hundred local people joined the Panhandle excursion to Cincinnati and other points. The trip departed early yesterday morning and returned late last night.
The Walton high school track team representing Cass county scored two points at the seventh annual IHSAA track meet held Saturday in Crawfordsville. Ray Bishop placed third in the shot put and Edgar Bishop placed third in the running broad jump. Kokomo led with thirteen points while South Bend, Monticello and Linton tied for second with twelve. Thirty high schools were represented.
Royal Centre autoists cancel the planned trip to Marion after Dr. M. M. Mayfield of Marion, formerly of Royal Centre, is called to Lafayette to be with his brother critically ill from a recent accident. The brother’s wife, also injured, remains hospitalized in Lafayette.
Fred Jackson nearly blind was arrested last evening at 1199 Market Street groping the front porch. Mrs Graffis and her mother thought a burglary and called police. Jackson told police he was lost and trying to find the sidewalk. He was released.
