Flooding from a heavy rain washed away most of the Adamsboro mill dam on Eel River. Fishermen below the wreck escaped with only their gear lost as the structure tumbled into rushing water. The mill owned by W. T. Wilson is shut down awaiting repairs.
Warrants have been issued at Decatur for Amos W. Butler William P. Streeter and Mrs Deborah S. Wall to appear before Judge R R Erwin on June 8. They face contempt charges over custody of two children withheld from Mary Bentz under a court order. The case traces to a 1899 divorce and custody arrangement involving Joseph Bentz and the orphans home at Marion.
The West Side school eighth grade debating club yesterday favored country life over city life in a heated discussion. The affirmative won after judges J Ringleben Rev Canse and C Stuart judged the debate. Debaters for SA included Gail Uhl Carl Hart James Smith Clyde Strong Elizabeth Eikelburner and Frank Dock. 8B members were Emma Mucker William Grass Earl Bennett Edith Watts Charles Cotner and Homer Edwards. Otto Prosch and Harry Fidler returned from three days fishing at Lake Manit an with good results.
Logansport high school track team leaves at 7:40 AM for Marion to face Richmond Kekome and Marion in a 1:30 PM meet. Coach Conach Wilkins predicts many events to be won. Marion offers a celebratory reception with supper at Spencer hotel and a dance after the meet. The team plans to return around 3 AM Sunday.
University of California researchers report rich cave discoveries in Shasta County. They have unearthed about 4000 specimens, with 17 extinct animal bones, and reveal traces of prehistoric man including polished bone and stone implements likely used as utensils or weapons.
Sevent h year pupils from Washington school organized a social outing at Spencer park led by teacher Mr Shinn. Fifteen boys paid streetcar fares while eighteen girls supplied lunch and drinks. The day featured ideal weather with baseball games and other activities followed by a 6 30 supper at the south pavilion, then more games. A waiting car ferried the children home at eight after a well earned picnic celebrated for their conduct and school achievements.
Marion Leader reports J E Barnes and Son of Logansport won the bid to add four rooms to the Adams Sherman and Adams Thirteenth street school buildings for 15996 dollars. Work to start within three weeks with the aim of readying the schools for fall term opening.
T. O. Boyd, purchasing agent, reports the company has bought the right of way from this city to Winamac and work to secure grants from Winamac to Chicago along a rough survey by Surveyor Foster will begin at once.
All men are invited to bring another man to a men's meeting at the association rooms 410 Canal street Sunday May 24 at 8 p m Rev S J Mellinger will speak Mr Arthur and Miss Myrtle Faust will sing.
The Columbus London and Sprite field Traction company announced a sleeping car service between Columbus and Cincinnati. The cars will share twenty sections.
John M. Bliss ex clerk of Cass county died at his home near Royal Center at age 52 after a long illness caused by persistent hemorrhages. He served twice as county clerk and was a member of the Elks. He married Minnie Potter eight years ago and returned to farm life after leaving office. Funeral likely Monday under Elks auspices.
The Longwell Cummings company issued a new Logansport directory and Cass county gazetteer praised as the most careful and accurate yet. It includes rural route subscriber names and country town business lists, reflects population growth, and was updated to capture late changes.
Indiana county treasurers begin spring settlements with the auditor of state though the official time is June 1. Franklin county led with 15951.32 paid and 6912.61 kept for schools, Union county followed with 10084.54 paid and 3919.85 kept. Longstanding practice has treasurers delay settlements to maximize use of funds. Bank lending troubles and scarce rural borrowers drive early settlements this spring.
The Forbes hotel in Monticello owned by John Keinley of Logansport was robbed. John Keefe, an eighteen year old porter, took $8 from the drawer and $360 from the safe, fled to Reynolds and boarded a Chicago-bound train. Police pursued. arrest not yet made. Keefe is son of John Keefe, a Kentland resident.
Forty three applicants, including three Cass County women, take seats at 9:00 in the county high school for carrier positions on thirty three rural routes. Special Agents Swain Ela McConnell and Hughes conduct the written exam as Ela compliments the class.
The loss has been made good by the boy's father, and it is not likely that any further steps will be taken to find him.
At 9 this morning the examination began with women among the hopefuls surprising post office agents. Officials note no impropriety in applications and good grades will earn positions. Indiana has several women already carrying mail, praised for fine service. Agent Ela, who mapped routes, called the class capable and well qualified.
Albert A. Patterson of the University of Michigan vanished after leaving a note claiming danger from a Mexican mafia. Dr. Victor Vaughan disclosed that the red on Patterson's hat was only dye, and Patterson is expected to return once the alarm subsides.
The number of theological students in Germany fell from 4267 in 1836 to about 2100, less than half, even as the population doubled since 1830. German theologians discuss sufficiency of ministry candidates as a serious issue.
J. T. Elliott and his wife left for Indianapolis this afternoon to stay with relatives and friends for the weekend, returning Sunday.
Ethel Younglove stays with relatives in Clymers. Local social notices list her visit as part of community events.
Ward school faculties in Logansport debate holding a citywide picnic for all students at Spencer Park on June 3. Most favor the event, but some teachers prefer separate picnics for their own schools.
H S Tousley, division operator at the Panhandle, plans a small steam launch for Eel river fishing and pleasure. It will be for the family's use only and may be built locally or ordered, aiming to provide comfort for the whole family.
Earl Stewart of Fourth Street Livery announces starting June 1 the discontinuation of his horse hotel and boarding department. He has notified patrons keeping horses at his stable that boarding will cease, while the livery business continues.
The funeral of the late Charles M Breckenridge who died Thursday morning at Cairo Illinois was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence No 263 West Market Street Rev E Yates Hill of the First Presbyterian church conducted the services Interment was made in Mt Hope cemetery
Joseph Graffis went to Chicago this afternoon to spend Sunday, planning leisure time and travel before returning.
Simon Birkenruth left this morning for Chicago to visit his son Harry Birkenruth, a jockey employed by Ezeil and Lazarus for a major race.
In Frankfort Indiana on May 23 Mrs Martha Gordon wore a white petti coat for a wedding vows fulfilled to marry Henry Harris. The ceremony took place in the county clerk's office with Justice of the Peace William Campbell officiating as guests watched. She later changed back into her skirt after the vows.
The Bradford division of the Panhandle adds two new Sunday trains No 48 and 41 on the Logansport Bradford division for the first summer trip starting tomorrow. Train 48 departs Bradford east at 4 30 p m and train 41 arrives from Bradford east at 10 20 a m. Train 43 changes to 5 30 a m departure for Chicago.
The Elks national home at Bedford City Virginia was dedicated before about 5000 attendees from across the country. Gov Andrew Jackson Montague US Senator John W Daniel Frederick Warde and George P Cronk spoke with Mead D Detwiler delivering the main oration. An old Virginia barbecue fed 3500 after the ceremony. The home is open for aged and indigent Elks and will house 250. About 40000 was spent renovating and furnishing the facility.
Excavation for the Buttner Fire Brick and Clay plant in Volant uncovered the ruins of a counterfeiter’s den. The site reveals past spurious coin makers who operated before the Civil War.
Mrs. R. C. Richards and Mrs. M. H. Krauss hosted a lawn social at the Richards residence in East North Street. Ice cream was sold for ten cents a dish and a large piece of homemade cake was included, with profits for Market Street Church.
Joseph Williams, resident two miles north of town, brought the season’s first home grown strawberries to town yesterday afternoon. He said they are not perfect this year but better than Mississippi and other states’ shipments. Markets should be well supplied within two weeks.
J. A. McCullough, ticket agent at the Panhandle depot, has been ill at his North street home but is now much improved and on the mend.
Clyde Musselman, who escaped Cass County Jail, has been captured in Scottsburg Indiana and awaits trial for grand larceny. He previously cut his throat during capture attempts after being jailed for intoxication and breach of peace. He escaped from solitary confinement by loosening a cell lock and leaving through the sheriff’s residence.
Major George W. Steele displays a winning temper and broad smiles to win support in the Eleventh district as he weighs a congress run. His backers say breaking his crust of aloofness helped his appeal. He marched with veterans at Anderson Grand Army encampment to gain cheers.
Wright formerly ran the Logansport Journal and recently returned from Mexico and Central America after gathering material for eastern newspapers. He once advised Jiminez, president of Santo Domingo, who was deposed and lived in New York before returning to the country.
