In a jail Satire a mock court with George Morter as judge and Van Dyne as bailiff 'tries' inmates. The court fines a drunken prisoner twenty five cents and orders flogging with a towel before the prisoner writes a sheriff to reclaim his money. The officials now await the next offender.
Claude Griffith one of two boys killed in a Pennsylvania train accident was buried at Crown Point cemetery after a quiet service at United Brethren church. His sole surviving relative, his mother now Mrs. Wesley Maze, attended briefly at Losey morgue. Services for Elgie Houser were held at Mount Zion church with burial at Galveston cemetery. Authorities have yet to determine the accident cause, with theories of a buggy entanglement unproven.
The local loft of Haymakers No. 17044 will install officers at its next gathering. The twelfth annual convention of the St Joseph societies of Indiana arrives with about a thousand delegates in Logansport. An elaborate program runs Sunday through Monday with mass, sermons, a parade, and a banquet at the Elks hall hosted by Mayor McKee. Delegates arrive tonight and stay at Johnston Hotel. headquarters and reception are arranged for the event.
The board of public works cautions city firemen and police not to engage in politics under new law. Violations may lead to fines and imprisonment. Previously firemen urged convictions and candidates and some served on conventions where candidates were named.
Harley Byerly of Long cliff returns from Anamosa with Mrs Byerly to announce the birth of a pretty daughter and Mr Byerly is described as the proud father.
Indiana county surveyors gain a lucrative role under a new law transferring ditch repair oversight from township trustees to the county surveyor. Surveyors may contract work, earn $4 daily, and must recalculate costs to be assessed against affected properties, triggering widespread re surveying to create county records. The change promises a large workload as several counties expand staff to meet obligations.
Indignation runs high at Colfax south of Logansport as fire bugs set three blazes in an hour. Isaac Hutchinsons saw mill survived discovery, while barns owned by John Lamum and J W Adner burned with contents. A fine brood mare owned by Albert Parsons was found shot along the highway as the perpetrators left.
An advertisement in the Reporter for a lost raccoon led Mrs. Clint Whitesell to a disturbance on Nineteenth street where two women were frightened by a fierce looking animal. She retrieved the animal, it snuggled to her, and the coon is now back in its familiar haunts.
No electric lights in Flora as the four month period to begin plant construction expired. A franchise granted to D. E. Miller lapsed, freeing the town to consider other improvements such as a new town hall.
Justice Minnick of Walton had two ribs rebroken after a prior fracture from a buggy accident a year earlier. He previously suffered a lung injury and pneumonia but recovered. The ribs were dressed today by Dr Ballard and he is on the road to recovery.
Judge Fender fined William Amy 25 dollars for making a cigarette for 14 year old Harry Swisher, while Swisher was released. The trio was arrested for cigarette law violations. Amy paid the fine, Swisher was freed. The judge warned awaiting higher court ruling on cigarette cases.
In Elkhart county Ben ton township the subsidy election for $8 000 for the Huntington and Columbia City traction railway ended by a 14 vote margin. A factional clash at the polls required closing as railroad supporters and farmers clashed with clubs amid fraud allegations from both sides.
The Logansport high school girls glee club presented two handsome steel engravings by Charles A. Walker to the school. The peaceful rural scenes are finely framed and add valuable art to the high school collection.
The board of trustees rejected Sebastian Ferguson's bid to build the North Side school and awarded the contract to Frank Medland for 12000 dollars, Ferguson's bid being 11610. Bondsmen will cover any bid difference if the board decides there is a gap. Mahoney indicated Medland's extras bring his total near Ferguson's estimate.
In the Panhandle yards at Logansport shops, major readjustments are under way. The old coal docks have been removed and the yard office moves, with Road Foreman McDonald to occupy the wreck tracks site. A box car serves as temporary offices for homeless officials as plans forecast larger investments in the near future.
Samuel L. Richardson filed charges of provoke profanity and intoxication against Caleb Meadow of Hoovers. Meadow pled guilty to intoxication and was fined. Judge Fender fined John K. Miller for provoke after a family quarrel. A change of venue moved Louis A. Miller vs Daniel and Martin E. Prewett to circuit court for $500 agent's fees.
A Colorado traveler encountering Indiana tobacco laws on Market Street in Logansport was warned by a local citizen to discard his cigarette. He complied and declared he would stay out of the state, turning back toward his hotel.
Frank Groh, a yard conductor for the Panhandle Railroad, is visiting Chicago. The trip highlights his role and the rail line’s operations in the Midwest.
A $40 note once issued to William Fisher and secured by W H Dritt as surety is declared a forgery by Dritt. The note signature was a crude counterfeit. Fisher disappeared westward years ago, making recovery unlikely and the event deemed an outlawed matter with no prosecution planned.
Rev J M Canse pastor of Simpson M E church Fort Wayne will arrange Indiana Epworth League excursion to Denver for the international convention in July. Headquarters set at Unity church with Aldine as state hotel and Chicago to Omaha to Denver via Union Pacific. Possible post convention excursion to Portland Oregon with low rates expected for Hoosier delegation.
A South Side report claimed Blacksmith C P Reist was kicked by a fractious horse and landed against an anvil, but Reist contradicts the tale saying he was not shoeing a horse and did not fall on the anvil. The piece questions who was actually kicked and asks Silas Morgan to investigate and report.
