A paralyzed tramp, Daniel M. Bevis, is held on suspicion of robbing a Galveston bank several nights ago. Chicago detective and court exchange taunts as Bevis, sobered yet mocked, denies the claim while witnesses laugh at the scene. Bevis concedes he may have received liquor from the arresting officer.
A street car manned by non union crew jumped the tracks at Eighth and Walnut Evansville crashing into a building and burying three people, two with skull fractures and a baby severely injured. The collision followed a fight on the car as a union sympathizer attacked the motorman.
The Ottes face Frankfort tomorrow afternoon at Spencer Park. They sealed two straight shutouts recently and aim to repeat the feat. Carroll will pitch as Michele leaves with the Cherokee Indian team.
Mr and Mrs S M Cogley on the Royal Center pike north of the city observed their golden wedding anniversary yesterday They were wed in Harrisburg Pennsylvania and all living children attended the family celebration at home
The matron invited Manager Dowling and the inmates of the orphan home attended a vaudeville show this afternoon. The children enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon.
Manager Hardie of the Crystal theater will travel to Marien tomorrow for the annual convention of Crystal theater managers. About fifteen managers are expected to attend.
Local divisions of the Pennsylvania railroad comply with the Full Crew law. On Thursday a flagman was assigned to all passenger trains with four or more loaded coaches.
In Logansport the twenty month old son of Mr and Mrs Richard Helvie died of malignant diphtheria after his mother viewed a coffin at a Peru infant's burial earlier. The mother is critically ill with diphtheria. the infant's funeral occurred the day of the report.
A baby girl about four years old, traveling on the Panhandle train to Cincinnati, drew crowds at the passenger station. Her head appeared over twice the size of normal, with a forehead about eight or nine inches thick, though she seemed happy and waved at onlookers.
A hay rack toppled onto Sixth Street beside the No 2 engine house when a farmer from north of the city attempted to drive on the sidewalk to dump hay into the engine house window. The farmer was half buried in hay but uninjured. hay had to be pitched off the sidewalk.
The state G A R encampment will be held in Fort Wayne starting Monday for three days. A number of local old settlers will attend though attendance from Logansport and other cities declines yearly due to aging and deaths among the veterans.
Engine No. 302 on Vandalia train No. 42 blew its cylinder head north of the city causing long delays. Passenger No. 45 due at 7 30 was also delayed.
The valuable horse owned by Dr. Gilbert, which broke its hind leg yesterday when it fell on the Third street bridge over the Wabash river, was shot this afternoon at O'Donnell's livery barn.
The Cass County Historical Society held its first old settlers meeting in the Library Hall with Judge Baldwin opening remarks on campaigning and politics. E S Rice spoke on early business houses and methods, Joseph Patterson on canal transportation, and a Grand Army quartet sang wartime songs. Mrs J W Ballard delivered a paper on the Society of the Early Times outlining social life, parties, spinning, rug carpet sewing, husking bees, barn raisings, and country dances.
Miss Josephire Fickle of Indianapolis, relative of D. D. Fickle, has been elected to the national convention of the Typographers Union at Hot Springs Arkansas. She is the first woman from the city to be chosen as a printer delegate.
Police seek Domico Loiocano an Italian who married Lucia Arrona after which he vanished to avoid possible imprisonment for criminal assault. His deserted wife claims furniture deeded to her hides value far above what she can prove and garnisheed funds are small. Relatives vow to punish him if found.
The District Epworth League of the North Indiana Conference announces multiple rallies in the district with a May 24 event at Broadway MB Church. Mrs. A S Boyer district third vice president will lead the program with the three city leagues directing. Rev C W Smith of Peru state president will speak to the youth.
Ruth Garrett, a Logansport high school graduate, ages under twenty, sails from New York for Mullenberg Liberia to work among natives. She joins Lutheran missionaries, with a coffee plantation aiding the near self supporting mission, leaving behind family and local ties for life in the jungles of Africa.
Fidelity Lodge No 109 B of R T members meet at 1 30 p m tomorrow to attend the funeral of A H Brown. All railroad men are united.
Major W. M. DeHart of Company D, 46th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, has had a court of claims grant back pay for October 5 to November 5, 1861. He initially argued the pay date should start October 5, and will also receive interest. The 46th regt. saw heavy action at Champion Hill, Mississippi, with 416 killed and 1,844 wounded in about four hours, a pivotal clash cited by General Grant. The unit’s reunion is planned for October in this city.
Roy E. Larimer of the private Third battalion engineers at Fort Leavenworth Kansas writes that his regiment sails to the Philippines in June. He notes a pleasant voyage is hoped for, but not much pleasure awaits once they arrive. Larimer is a well known local figure with many relatives.
Several young news boys regularly jump onto interurban cars as they stop at the station. They run from the platform and onto moving cars, sometimes in groups of five or six, risking injury.
Panhandle railroad detectives hold William Pane Melvin W Lane and John Fullon in the county jail on suspicion of involvement in a string of robberies reported in towns and cities along the line recently.
Twenty fox hunters led by D. M. Watts of this city and Wilson Searight of Jefferson township chased foxes in Bethlehem township yesterday. Three foxes were stirred up and one got away.
The Foresters chose Sunday June 9 as Memorial day. They will decorate graves independently this year after previously joining with other fraternal orders for joint services.
A fire yesterday afternoon at the Ike Williams residence on Melbourne Avenue started on the roof from a defective flue. The blaze was confined to the roof with no injuries reported. Firefighters from the local department extinguished the flames and secured the scene.
Mr and Mrs H J McSheehy depart this morning heading to Culver in what appears to be a routine trip for the couple with no immediate plans announced.
Buck Stanley, former deputy sheriff turned evangelist, describes tracking and capturing Bill and Amer Green in Texas. He aided by Oscar Michaelis, editor of the Kendallville News, recounts imprisoning them in Fort Worth and Delphi mob lynching of Amer Green in October 1887. Stanley discusses pardon efforts and local signatures in the Mabbitt area.
William Harrison former deputy county surveyor leaves Monday for Brown county Indiana to take part in the government geological survey during the summer. Last year he worked in the West Virginia mountains. Brown county recently had no railroad and is believed mineral rich.
